Beyond just improving grades, the most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence. Many students fail maths not because they aren't smart, but because they have 'maths anxiety' and believe they can't do it. A great tutor changes that mindset by creating a safe space to make mistakes. Secondly, a tutor must teach independent study…

A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all,…

The tutor should do regular monitoring regarding how much the students has learned and should not jump to next topic until or unless the previous one's are clear. As a student myself, the important things a tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. And, another important point to note is that every student is unique, so as a tutor, I should be able to adapt to the teaching style…

I believe a tutor should have a better understanding of student's perspectives. To elaborate, every student has a different perspective, and some will go in a very different direction tutor should understand the student's perspective before judging or correcting students. The tutor should ask questions and should bring up real-life examples so…

A tutor can inspire and instill self belief/self esteem back into a student. A tutor can motivate students to study hard and receive good marks. When students receive good marks the student gains self esteem and confidence and ultimately happiness (which akes tutoring very rewarding). Motivation and understanding the learning need of a student. Most of these students come because they are either challenged or want to be ahead of the game in class. Motivation is one of the core soft skills a tutor should have. Without it and an understanding of how a student effectively learns, all of the tutor's knowledge is in vain. I’m an…

Change of a student's viewpoint towards a subject. Once the attitude is changed rest is easy. Science is the study of natural laws and math is the universal language. We are studying nature in science and writing it down in math. It is very important for a student to feel connection to a subject. Not every student has the same thought process,…

The things I consider most important for tutors are clarity, confidence, and independence. Clear explanations can turn topics that a student might shy away from into smaller ideas that they can relate to and therefore understand. Confidence grows when you celebrate small wins and frame mistakes as part of the learning process. Afterwards,…

Inside DallasTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Wellson revised solving simultaneous equations using matrices in maths, and also practiced analytical writing techniques for English assignments.

In Year 11, Abby focused on preparing notes and drafting essays comparing *The Dressmaker* and *The Crucible* for her upcoming English exam, as well as researching career paths and university options.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Wellson worked through advanced maths topics such as transition matrices and steady state matrices while also reviewing feedback from previous English SACs to strengthen his essay structure and exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, "frequently forgetting to write down all working out" meant a student lost track of steps when solving algebra problems, making it hard to spot where things went wrong.

For a Year 11 student, missing or inconsistent use of the graphics calculator—after it was stolen— made tackling maths exercises much slower and more frustrating.

In senior English, one student struggled with planning essays and didn't consistently apply teacher feedback, leading to weaker arguments under exam conditions.

As a tutor noted: "Formatting of solutions is less organised than it should be, which makes it harder to follow for future reference."

Recent Achievements

A Dallas tutor recently noticed Oscar, a high school student, now talks through his problem-solving steps aloud and needs far less reassurance than before—he's started using the backchecking method independently instead of asking for constant confirmation.

Abby, also in high school, used to get overwhelmed by essay planning but has begun creating cohesive revision schedules and compiling her own notes for upcoming exams without prompting.

Meanwhile, in a Year 6 session, one student who previously froze on tricky maths questions began writing out all available information first and tried different approaches until finding a solution.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ilim College - Kiewa Campus.
