Listening to students and identifying the areas in which students need additional assistance is one of the most crucial roles of a tutor. Therefore, tutors must be responsive to students by carefully listening to their areas of concern, and taking these into account in order to organize lessons that are best suited for developing the necessary…

Being able to understand the student. Being able to gage their skill level, understanding of the content and whether they are actually improving or not. I think my strengths are catering to each students particular needs. For example, I am able to teach content that students may find boring in a way that may be more appealing to them. For example,…

- Simplify the subject/topic at hand, making a very challenging topic seem approachable and solvable. - Build rapport, and perhaps gain a form of friendship, so that the learning experience seems less like teaching at school/university, and more friendly and relaxed, which is conducive to enjoyable learning. I believe in a teaching/tutoring…

A tutor needs to care about their student. Without a sense of trust between teacher and student, there exists no confidence in either party. The student's faith in the system declines, as does the teacher's faith in the student. Thus, what I deem THE most important factor in tutoring is to show compassion and understanding to a student; to show…

Being open to answering any questions that is why it is important for the tutor to know their level and teach the stuff they are confident with. I also being that the tutor should be able to empower the students and be able to talk to them at a friendly level. The old proverb comes to mind of: "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime." I think the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire the student, and not just equip them with English skills, but confidence and motivation. The most important thing is to believe in the student, so…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to assist the student in developing various problem solving techniques, especially with challenging questions. By doing so allows the student to reconsolidate their learning, as well as approach questions differently. This overall builds confidence for students to not fear…

Extending beyond the scope of just being a tutor at set times is key for a student’s confidence and rapport building. Knowing they can contact me outside contact hours for small things here and there encourages them to strive to get the most out of their tutoring experience and get better results, for me, for them and for their parents.…

For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

A tutor should be patient and be flexible, able to adjust their lesson plan according to student needs. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their students and the way they learn! 1. Empathetic: Understands what it’s like to be a student who may lack confidence, feel stressed, be overwhelmed or just not understand the material. 2. Honest: Don’t hesitate to say that you do not know about a particular concept. Trying to bluff your way through will only hurt the student and your reputation in the long run. 3.…

A tutor should be capable enough to teach their students in a way where the knowledge imparted isn't just taught for the exams or tests, but taught as a lesson which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. I am extremely patient when it comes to explaining a concept. I am very calm and composed around people who are younger to me.…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Inside DandenongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ayaan worked on adding and comparing decimals, then moved to a practice test focused on basic algebraic expressions.

Year 8 student Zara tackled statistics by finding mean, median, mode, and range using real data sets, followed by interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Michael prepared for an upcoming algebra assessment by creating linear equations from graphs and exploring intercepts through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework, which limited their grasp of recent algebra content—"needs to work on completing homework assigned by tutor to be able to get a better grasp of knowledge."

In Year 11, time management in assessments was a challenge; extra minutes were spent searching through notes instead of solving problems directly.

One Year 7 learner hesitated when facing multi-step worded questions, sometimes pausing midway and doubting their approach despite knowing the method.

When asked to show working for area calculations, another student initially struggled but responded after prompting, showing the impact that process habits have on confidence during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dandenong tutor noticed Haylee, a high school student, has started writing her own notes more effectively and now uses them when tackling test questions—something she hesitated to do before.

In another session, Elma (also in high school) was able to work through most practice test problems independently after previously needing regular prompting.

Meanwhile, Amelia from Year 7 remembered how to convert units accurately for the first time without hints, having struggled with this step earlier in the term.

Last week, Haylee finished an entire worksheet applying new techniques on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dandenong Primary School.
