I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build genuine understanding and confidence. It's not just about getting the right answer, but about teaching them how to think through a problem independently. I tend to create a comfortable space where students feel safe asking questions, break down complex ideas into clear…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and…

I find it important for students to know and feel that their individual needs are heard, understood and attended to. It would be most important to follow through all plans, tailored to their needs, with actions that allow the students to realise their progress. By also validating their strengths and identifying their self-limiting beliefs, I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence as well as academic understanding. Every tutor works hard to make a student understand the value of education. One-on-one tutoring is a great way to inspire a student to do their best and reach their full potential. A tutor gets to know a student more than a teacher in a classroom setting. We personalise our teaching based on every student and boost their confidence if they are…

Give time to the student. Clear doubts if any in their mind. I believe in hierarchical learning of a concept. By breaking the tougher questions into small easier parts, student can understand it better First and…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. I think the most important thing is to genuinely listen and respond to what a student actually needs, rather than sticking rigidly to a script. Being honest with them, celebrating real progress and gently addressing real gaps, builds trust, and trust is what makes a student open up when they're struggling. Beyond the academics, I think a tutor…

Inside Dandenong NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Giancarlo worked on identifying and using reflexive pronouns, then broke down the main components of narrative writing by brainstorming ideas for each stage.

Year 10 student Kylie focused on sketching cubic functions and drawing sign diagrams, followed by solving cubic inequalities in her Methods textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia revised indices and tackled algebra worded problems from a school pre-test, working step-by-step to translate real-life scenarios into equations to solve for x.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, one student frequently made calculation errors and ran out of time in exams, as a tutor observed: "She rushed to finish and missed double-checking her answers." This led to incomplete sections and lost marks on straightforward questions.

In VCE Maths Methods, there was repeated over-reliance on reference sheets for circular functions tables, with confusion persisting when the sheet wasn't available—especially during technology-free tasks.

For Year 3 English, another student's written work showed very basic sentence structures; attempts at narrative writing lacked detail or complexity. Without guidance, progress stalled when more depth was required.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dandenong North noticed Kylie now independently checks her own work for errors and corrects mistakes on the spot—something she previously overlooked.

Another recent win: after some initial confusion with the rational root theorem in polynomial division, Kylie worked through a few examples and could solve similar problems herself without prompting.

For a younger learner, Giancarlo has moved from needing frequent help to confidently identifying literal answers in reading comprehension questions, completing tasks almost entirely on his own.

Last week, Kylie finished her extended response questions for chapter review 1 by drawing diagrams to support her thinking.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lyndale Greens Primary School.
