Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. The students open up more to the teacher. This helps the teacher to plan on how to help the student. I can understand what the student needs. I can connect with the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor lessons to their unique learning style, and create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. Beyond just teaching content, a tutor should inspire curiosity, foster a positive attitude toward learning, and help the…

My aim is to not just make my students pass exams; but to go above and beyond in their learning to surpass what they thought was possible. I strive to create an atmosphere of joy and inspiration, whilst encouraging perseverance and direction for a student in their studies. Most importantly, I support my students to create a vision of who they want…

The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. Next is polishing the student's skills with extensive exercises while making sure he has time for other hobbies. It helps if the tutor is aware of things such as fun interactive quizzes or videos that helps makes concepts seem simpler while also keeping…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them. By getting to know a student's personality and how they work generally and how they are feeling to work on the day really helps in moving the class along smoothly whilst also keeping a good rapport with the student. My strengths as a tutor are patience and flexibility as…

I think the most important thing is not to dump all my knowledge onto a student, but to have them have their own lightbulb moment, and figure out ways and strategies that work for best them. I am able to go at a pace that they are able to adapt to, implement different strategies easily, and I get along with a wide range of people, creating a safe…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being patient. Every student is unique and has his/her specific needs in terms of how to deliver a specific content. Patience is the most important thing that is needed, in my opinion, in order to clearly understand a particular student's needs and to craft a lecture that is successfully…

I can easily tell if a student really understands a concept properly. If a student doesn't, then I know there's need to correct that by providing them with fundamental…

Tutors are different with teachers, of course. As a tutor, I can teach fewer students in a small classroom (1to1/1to 2), which means I can take care of each child, not only on their school work but also on their mental thinking ; I can answer their questions in time or straight away; I can help them to have a look of their homework questions or…

Be very accessible - the student should feel comfortable in asking the tutor questions. Knowledge - the tutor must have the required knowledge and resources that the student requires. My strength would be my ability to adjust and…

Because I've been teaching so long I've taught…

Show the student how to learn something. If a tutor can explain another way of looking at problems so that the student understands how to approach them, its the most useful thing for them. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Inside DarlinghurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Maddison worked on trigonometry, focusing on finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles and solving problems involving elevation, depression, and bearings using diagrams.

For Year 10, revision included bearings and angle of depression before moving into probability concepts—correcting worksheet errors and previewing relative frequency and non-linear relationships.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student prepared for exams by discussing theoretical versus experimental probability with examples on relative frequency, followed by a review of non-linear relationships including parabolas, exponentials, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided asking questions in class when confused, especially during algebra and probability lessons; as one tutor noted, "she needed extra explanation, but didn't seek it out." This meant confusion built up until revisited later.

In Year 10 mathematics, another student struggled with exam preparation because revision focused only on familiar problems—when new question types appeared, confidence dropped sharply.

A senior student's messy working in geometry made errors hard to trace: "Working was so disorganised that small sign errors went unnoticed," a tutor observed. After the test, time was lost hunting for simple mistakes instead of reviewing concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Darlinghurst tutor noticed Maddison, a Year 9 student, now actively asks for help when stuck instead of guessing—something she avoided in earlier sessions.

In Year 11 maths, William took the initiative to list specific assignment areas he wanted to revisit and worked through complex probability questions with less guidance than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently completed 25 multiplication questions in under three minutes—a big jump from her slower attempts last term. Last week's session ended with her finishing all problems independently and double-checking her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Darlinghurst Public School.
