Beyond academic assistance, I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is offer guidance and support to students while they are navigating challenges, and also help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills. This includes skills such as time management or organizational skills, as well as techniques for…

I realised that the real challenge often isn't the students' abilities but their engagement with the content. My goal as a tutor is to approach material proactively, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask 'why?' and 'how?' instead of passively accepting information at face value. I believe in creating an environment where students feel…

Guidance. It's always guidance. Tutors facilitate learning and help activates students' potential. :) Tutors receive all the questions most of the students don't ask in class, and I find it amazing because real learning happens between tutors and students. I already know how to handle them and I can give excellent activities that they can enjoy…

A tutor provides structured 1 on 1 learning to go over curriculum that they might need help understanding, revising on, and support with. Furthermore, Tutors aid in developing better study practices through demonstration and giving their client the experience that can transition into improved study habits. Strengths: 1. I think a tutor's only job is to motivate their students and let them develop their own interests in the subject.  I think once you motivate them and make them think about the subject on their own, your job is done.  From then on, it's a matter of aiding their intellectual journey.  And I think what enables tutors to fulfil that job is using…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is addressing what the student struggles with the most, to focus on those areas that the student will be well-rounded. My strength in tutoring is that I will listen as to what the child struggles with, either from the child or from the parent, and then trying to deal with that…

I believe that the three most important things that a tutor can do for a student, perhaps the only important things which a teacher should do, are to make students curious about what they are learning and appreciate the beauty of what they are learning by developing a way of thinking of their own. I understand and appreciate the beauty and depth…

What a tutor should and need to do are guiding a child to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses with all of the power invested in ourselves; reminding and figuring out what their barriers are to success (such as are they afraid of they can't pass? or they are not receiving any support from their beloved ones?). In my power, I'd do…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, create a supportive learning environment, and help them develop independent learning skills. Some things I believe are crucial for tutors to do is to provide motivation for students so they are willing to learn, as well as teaching from the root of the topic including the working out methods to achieve the final answer. Furthermore, tutors should be able to recognise when a student has difficulty understanding a topic and take the…

Inside DerrimutTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emma revised quadratic equations and functions, focusing on graph interpretation and problem-solving; Year 10 student Lucas tackled trigonometry by graphing sine and cosine functions, along with a review of transformations to strengthen his foundation; meanwhile, Year 3 student Zoe practiced multiplication facts and solved word problems involving money using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, one student was "a bit lax with her homework," leading to missed practice on application questions and slower progress in trigonometry graphing.

In a senior English session, skipping questions when unsure meant some tasks were left incomplete and unattempted until prompted.

A Year 5 learner's written work was described as "hard to follow," with untidy layout making it difficult to check for errors—especially in multi-step problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly avoided challenging multiplication questions, returning only to familiar material and requiring frequent reminders to persist when tasks became unfamiliar or effortful.

Recent Achievements

One Derrimut tutor noted a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess at problems but now regularly asks for help when stuck, especially during complex homework—she completed nearly all tasks this week and initiated questions on her own.

A high schooler in Year 9 has started challenging herself by choosing harder questions for practice, getting them right on recent assignments after previously sticking only to basics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recite times tables can now confidently recall them aloud without prompting and tackled double-digit multiplication with less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Derrimut Primary School.
