This involves not only helping them understand the material but also building their confidence and critical thinking skills. I think a tutor doesn’t just help with academic skills, but they also create a safe and encouraging space where students feel heard, supported, and motivated to improve. By identifying a…

The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. I provide examples to clarify concepts, and I'm willing to explain the same material multiple times until my students…

Help understand the concept of the problem and the solution. Be patient to the student if they do not understand the problem right away. I personally think that if a student doesn't understand, the tutor needs to engage with the student first and ask them whether they really do understand or not. I'm really patient as a tutor and I am eager to…

Good tutors should be able to help students improve and not dependent on them, they should be able to help a student solve problems and not simply giving them answers. In addition, tutors also have to be patient as not all students have the same learning abilities. Lastly, I think a tutor should put in the effort to understand both the materials…

The most important thing is to trust the student that they can excel. When the tutor has faith on the student, it will make the student confident that they can do well in the subject and thus cultivate their love of learning. This way, the student can learn to like the subject that they are struggling in. Most importantly, I want children to not…

- Allow students to understand concepts and encourage curiosity I think as students we often feel that we are forced to learn things and sometimes it feels like labour which make people fear certain concepts. However, I think that as a tutor it is most important to remove that fear because knoweldge is not to be feared but to be known. -…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. I feel that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to act as a source of information throughout their time of studying. School can be, and often is, stressful, even if you love the subjects being taught and the teachers teaching them. Therefore, I think the role of a tutor hinges largely on offering support and passing on…

Ensuring the student's questions are answered clearly and properly, even if it requires a lengthy process. It is important for the tutor be enthusiastic at all times without showing feelings of apathy, even when the student asks the same question many times. In my opinion, the most important thing, that a tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Apart from this, understanding the knowledge graph of the student, and teaching him/her according to the pattern, which they understand the most, is…

Finding the gaps, especially when they are gaps from prior in the scaffolding process that will only amplify over time. Sometimes it is important to take a step or two backwards in that case and often that results in a quicker grasp of current concepts. Paying attention to the small things that make maths (or English) learning enjoyable or not for…

Inside DocklandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Hamish focused on place value and identifying prime numbers, using practice exam questions for consolidation.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving systems of linear equations by elimination and explored the distance formula between two points with visual explanations.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled function modelling with real-world examples (such as insect population growth) and analysed rectangular hyperbolas, including their transformations and asymptotes.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student's algebra work showed gaps due to incomplete homework and minimal revision of textbook questions—"she tended to skip the assigned practice," a tutor noted, which left some equation-solving steps unpracticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student felt overwhelmed by dense chemistry chapters and sometimes postponed review tasks; this led to confusion during multi-step equilibrium problems, especially when tired after tests.

In Year 4 maths, inconsistent working in times tables caused errors like "3 x 4 = 11."

A Year 12 student avoided asking for feedback on graphing questions, so misconceptions lingered into the next session.

Recent Achievements

One Docklands tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Maya, started their sessions feeling nervous about upcoming biology tests but now prompts herself to review marked work and pushes through practice questions independently—something she used to avoid.

In Year 10 maths, Hamish recently stopped skipping key steps when solving linear equations and inequalities; he now writes out double negatives rather than rushing, which helps him catch mistakes that previously cost marks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Lola has become noticeably quicker at linking old and new maths topics on her own and has started presenting her solutions with clarity during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Library at the Dock—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - City Boys.
