As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should not only help students answer specific questions, but also guide them in developing problem-solving skills and effective ways of thinking. Listening carefully, identifying gaps in understanding, and adapting…

Imparting information is an important part of being a tutor, but modelling curiosity, a genuine love of learning and knowledgem and above all showing others what it looks like to be passionate about the at or discipline is as important. I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

It is important for a top achieving student to become academically independent; he must learn how to learn things for themselves and what it really means to understand a concept. A good tutor, I believe can help students become academically independent by trying to build confidence in the student by affirming their self-worth and helping them…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include: 1. Foster Understanding: A tutor’s primary role is to help the student grasp the subject matter. This means breaking down complex ideas into simpler parts, providing clear explanations, and offering different perspectives until the student understands. 2. Build Confidence: By…

I think that would be putting themselves as a student and be the teacher they always wanted/needed when they were their age. There is nothing more powerful than a teacher who is still a student at heart, in my opinion. Empathy as a student, as well as finding simple ways to explain complex…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students, is to be their friends. It helps providing the students an environment where they can enjoy what they are studying. Do not try to impose the thought that he believes the correct solution and try to explain to the student how to arrive at the reasoning that gives the answer. I think a tutor needs to be encouraging so that students can develop positive attitudes towards their studies, as that will help them succeed on their own. A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

I think the most important thing is to help a student build confidence, not just get through a problem. If they believe they can’t do it, nothing else works. I had self doubt right before my HSC exams, so I truly know how important confidence is and how strongly it affects a person’s performance. Second is to teach them how to think through a…

Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
