I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be present, understanding and supportive. A tutor should be someone a student can rely on for academic help as well as encouragement and motivation. By providing the resources, teaching, and guidance, a tutor should be able to empower their student and help them to feel confident…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

I think a tutor should understand a student's condition quickly and easily and see through the student on how they feel about the subject. A tutor must also be able to explain well and clearly, be patient and flexible. A tutor must show the student the way about how to learn. I am patient, reliable and know many ways on how to explain things to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. Constant mentoring and motivation goes a long way in maximising students' academic performance. It is also necessary to give students personalised advice to ensure they target their time and energy in the right tasks, especially in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand said student, and adjust their methods accordingly. I believe a tutor has to make sure that students fully understand the material they are learning so that they can apply what they learn and ultimately be able to do the more difficult questions by themselves. With constant practice and drilling, students will be more comfortable doing the questions themselves and be confident in the…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

2 Visions I embrace with every student I teach: 1. For the student to adopt good work habits. I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I'm patient and adaptable, and I take the time to explain concepts in different ways until they really make sense to the student. I try to create an encouraging space where they feel…

Encouraging independence is significant. Students should be introduced to strategies to be independent and more effective learners. Being a motivator who encourages students to strive to be the best they can, to reach their goals, to focus on their strengths so that they will be successful in the future. Also, building strong relationships with…

I think confidence is key, it’s not about rigorous testing, its about ensuring that they have confidence to solve the problem, focusing on teaching the method in different ways. A tutor should be able to understand a student very well and be with them when they are in need. Many students tend to hate maths for a number of reasons but surely this can easily been changed and it is the tutor’s responsibility to do so. My main strength is that I am great with kids. I can easily understand a child’s weakness and will…

Inside EarlwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through quadratic expressions, focusing on factorising both monic and non-monic equations using the PSF method, and practiced solving quadratics by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

For Year 7, Aimee concentrated on converting between decimals and percentages as well as reviewing mean, mode, median, and range in data sets, rounding off with division practice.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Cooper tackled converting mixed fractions to improper fractions (and vice versa), along with simplifying fractions using guided examples from class resources.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors, making it difficult to trace where calculations went wrong.

For a Year 7 assignment, forgetting the assignment sheet for geography led to confusion about requirements and incomplete planning.

A senior student working on compound interest relied heavily on calculator use without manual checking, missing conceptual understanding.

In primary-level word problems, a tendency to avoid writing full explanations meant answers lacked clarity—especially when units were omitted.

After setbacks with tricky fraction tasks in Year 6 maths, confidence dropped and revision was avoided for harder questions, slowing improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Earlwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 9 student's approach to surds: while she was hesitant to attempt questions independently at first, by the end of the session she worked through all the problems on her own and even explained her reasoning out loud.

Another high school student, previously slow with percentage change calculations, now solves them much faster and connects ideas from previous weeks without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to read quietly and wait for correction now reads research material aloud during sessions, double-checks his work independently, and found key information himself for an assignment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Earlwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.
