A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

A tutor must be aware of the needs of a student. They must understand what the student already knows, and how they best learn, and a good tutor can adapt to different student needs. A good tutor also needs to inject confidence into a student. Teaching is one thing, but showing a student that they can succeed is what makes a difference. I am a…

I believe the most vital thing a tutor can do for a student is to give an explanation. We tutors exist to answer and explain questions that a lesson can't provide. Generally, it is best that a student is comfortable asking questions without being judged by classmates and that is the foundation of learning. Not to mention, each tutor might have a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in their own ability to learn. While improving grades is important, a good tutor should also encourage students to think independently, ask questions, and develop problem solving skills that will help them beyond the classroom. A tutor should also be patient,…

Not only to foster understanding, but building confidence is essential. This involves fluency of course, but also being confident in trying many methods even if it gets tedious after the first few attempts, while being able to seek help no matter the triviality. The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. Inside East LindfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student James focused on consolidating money calculations and tackling worded multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Trai worked through plotting linear equations from tables and practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages while also reviewing rounding strategies.

For Year 11, Mario completed exam revision by practising logarithm questions alongside trigonometry and quadratic factorisation problems to strengthen his understanding before assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, a student frequently left working out blank when solving money questions and converting cents to dollars; as noted, "we didn't have much time at the end to cover it," which led to confusion when reviewing.

In Year 8 algebra, another student avoided writing steps and often erased work, resulting in repeated sign errors—"he rushes his work and does not write down his working making it easy to make mistakes."

For a Year 11 probability test, incomplete homework meant weaker recall of methods for combinations; missing practice resulted in stumbling on exam-style tasks under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Lindfield noticed a big shift for a Year 10 student who, after struggling with bearings questions last week, managed to get nearly all of them right on her recent test.

Another high schooler showed real independence by solving for x without prompting by the end of the session—previously, he'd always needed step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to confuse fraction placement could now accurately order fractions himself, finishing up by explaining his reasoning out loud for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lindfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lindfield East Public School.
