Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. It's necessary to be a good mentor and help students just not academically but advice them on any…

I think that having someone you can rely on to assist in achieving new personal bests is incredibly important for students who are being tutored. It's not just about improving grades, but building confidence and skills that can assist in other areas of life. I am very experienced working with various age groups, and highly adaptable to the needs…

I think that what a tutor has to do is first of all to motivate the students and make them feel good, having a close and pleasant relationship will help the student feel at ease. I think it is also very important to give feedback to the students, either to improve or to say that they are doing things well. It is also important to look for…

Understand them. Be able to see what it is that a student needs and what they are good at. I think a tutor needs a lot of empathy and needs to be able to understand how each student’s minds work and find the best way to teach them the subjects. I am very patient with students. I empathize with them since I remember very well what it is to be in…

To get them engaged and interested in a subject or topic. Although it is good to just teach the student how to pass the exam, I believe that by truly engaging and motivating a student they will get the most reward and the best results from their work. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. I am aware of different styles of learning…

Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster curiosity and build a student's confidence. Encouraging students to study a subject for a deeper purpose, rather than simply aiming for high grades, helps them develop genuine interest and motivation to learn. When students become curious, they are more likely to explore ideas…

I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
