The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide personalized help, boost their confidence, and make learning enjoyable. For instance, if a student struggles with math, a tutor can explain concepts in a way that matches the student's learning style. By encouraging them and praising their progress, the tutor helps the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. As a tutor, I believe I can help my students overcome any challenge they face in their studies, by teaching concepts in a way that they…

According to me, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage him and build up the confidence by giving the student positive feedback and helpful suggestions. Also, a tutor should always have an openness and adaptability to dynamic changes to understand situation with empathy as well as common sense. I believe my…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to be understanding and to identify the root cause of a student’s struggles, building their learning from that foundation and gradually guiding them to a point where they feel confident and comfortable with the subject. I believe my strength in tutoring lies in developing creative and tailored…

Understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, and each student is a unique experience that requires adapting and learning how to teach effectively again. And you will also need a lot of patience too. I have a strong background in mathematics and IT, having graduated from a competitive local high school. I have experience tutoring both…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. This involves building close bonds with their students to understand their academic needs so that tutoring sessions can be tailored specifically to the student. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

A tutor should be able to instill skills that will serve the students so well, both in academics and in life that they will no longer require help from us. I am very patient and non-judgemental when it comes to tutoring. I always try to put myself in my student's shoes, observe and try to cater to their needs, while making sure the quality of the…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

The tutor should be reliable, and help them unleash their potential. Students should learn that they are able to do things on their own, hence a tutor should also be encouraging. I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Build their confidence as much as their knowledge because a lot of students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they are convinced themselves they can’t do it. Beyond that, I think it’s important to teach a student how to think through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. The goal is to make them capable enough…

motivation, encouragement, and guidance. for me, tutoring is not about giving a subject material and that's it, the parents will leave with their child, therefore, you have to be trustworthy, and show them that he will be better not only as a student but also as a human. other than technical abilities, motivation and enthusiasm to the students,…

Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
