A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be understanding. Knowing how to teach a topic does not do much if a student is unwilling to learn, being understanding allows for a closer connection between a tutor and student and makes learning significantly easier. I believe that my strengths are my compassion and patience. This then…

A tutor not only teaches a subject but also educates students. There is a practically infinite number of resources for teaching English in any topic, from music and films to books and articles. Choosing the right resources is extremely beneficial for students to widen their knowledge about the world. While focusing primarily on English, I find it…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and understood. Ceating a space where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes is important. A good tutor should listen and adapt their approach based on the student’s needs. Sometimes students already have the ability but they just need someone…

If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

I view the role of a tutor as more of a assistant to the teacher. I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. It is the tutors role to teaching correct habits and strategies to tackle difficult or…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. I believe the most important thing a tutor can be to a student is patient and kind. This is because there could be a particular concept the student is struggling with, so the tutor needs to be able to help them learn and improve on that topic. Being patient and kind in explaining it to the student is, therefore, an important part of doing so.…

Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. Inside ElsternwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liliane worked on addition and subtraction in money scenarios, along with telling time on an analog clock.

In Year 10, Celia reviewed trigonometry concepts including sin/cos/tan and Pythagoras' theorem using worked examples, then practiced rearranging algebraic equations.

Year 11 student Bonnie focused on logarithmic equations and explored chemistry content involving valence electron shells, breaking down problems step by step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student approached rearranging algebraic equations by jumping straight to answers without breaking down steps—"needs to break down the order to solve the problems," a tutor noted—which led to confusion with signs and structure.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, another avoided planning essay paragraphs, which made sentence flow inconsistent and transitions awkward during practice essays.

For a Year 2 learner, attention wandered often in multi-step maths tasks, causing key instructions on place value and addition facts to be missed.

In each case, gaps in process or focus left errors unnoticed until review or feedback arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elsternwick noticed a big shift with Lara (Year 11), who now arrives each week with her own questions, having realised she gets more out of sessions when she pinpoints where she's stuck—something she never did before.

In Year 10 maths, Celia made real strides by not just memorising laws but confidently explaining how to expand and factorise equations on her own, even after struggling with perfect squares last term.

Meanwhile, Nushara (Year 4) finished all her homework on telling the time correctly and read aloud with clear expression during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Orrong Road Campus.
