As a tutor, it is most important to be patient and kind to the student. I always see myself as a peer of my students, and what I am doing is to help them build confidence in the subjects. I am able to break the complex content into pieces and explain every piece in detail to the students. I am good at engaging with students and responding to their…

Help students become interested in a subject they once thought was too difficult, and show them how to appreciate its complexities instead of getting lost in confusing terms. I believe one teacher can change a student’s path and help them fall in love with a subject. I am a thorough tutor, and I can vouch with confidence that I can make any…

Aside from the knowledge that you will share, it is patience, understanding the intellectual capacity of the student as well as their behavior are the things to consider to be a tutor. In my previous experience as online english tutor, whenever the students ask questions, I really make sure to answer them. I believe my strength is my patience in…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student are the foster independence and the information that you are giving out to them. A tutor must have a deep understanding in what you are teaching because after all, a tutor ultimate's job is to build student knowledges, skills and confidence levels high enough that they become…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel totally at ease with the subject. When they’re comfortable, they’re more open to asking questions and enjoying the learning process. It’s also about building their confidence, showing them they’re capable of understanding even the tricky stuff. And honestly, just…

The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

For me, the two most vital things a tutor can do are to make learning stick and make it last. To make it stick, I focus on practical application. I bridge the gap between textbook theory and the real world, which makes the information tangible and easier to comprehend. To make it last, I focus on building the skills for continuous,…

A tutor should also be able to understand if a student is struggling and be able to help and guide them with patience so the…

There are a few but I think the point of a tutor is for reinforcement. There is no way that a tutor will be able to pump out as much content as a student will be able to consume from traditional school, however with the 1 on 1 nature of tuition, tutors can take topics a lot further than a teacher would for an entire class. Not only this, a tutor…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and understanding. I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. Further, a tutor should be organized and behave professionally to set out the aura of a good…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

Make them enjoy studying more, and imbue them with better study practices. Many students suffer from math anxiety or procrastination issues which hamper the effort they already put in. For a student, the most essential thing a tutor can do is imparting complete knowledge as half knowledge is dangerous. So, when a child is fully aware of something, he can be confident enough to explore more beyond his imagination. A tutor must be resilient enough to teach students in the best way. Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
