To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

One of the most important things tutor can do for a student is provide them with a lot of feedbacks as well as lots of revision. It is from feedback that students understand where they have been going wrong and how to improve on it. Revision is essential because knowing content is one thing, learning to apply them is another. From experience, I…

Being both supportive and empathetic are important. In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not force them into studying and to not put too much pressure on them to understand a certain topic. I believe that I can teach them in a way I have been taught and make them understand a certain problem easily. And even if I fail to make them understand I study the problem…

The most important things a tutor can do is help students understand that being wrong or not being as fast or as good at studying is not a bad thing. Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Inside Fairfield HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Andrew worked through different subtraction strategies and tackled word problems involving money, as well as breaking numbers into tens and ones to start the topic of length using tables.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving equations with brackets on both sides and practiced algebraic fraction equations, then moved into identifying trigonometric ratios in triangles.

For Year 10, Jade revised quadratic equations—using factorising—and worked with surface area and volume by calculating perimeters and areas for composite shapes such as rectangles and triangles.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue across several years.

For example, a Year 9 student "attempted homework minutes before our session—only half was completed, the rest forgotten."

In senior levels, students preparing for trigonometry or algebra tests sometimes left revision incomplete, leading to last-minute stress and gaps in recall ("was only notified during class that a yearly exam was occurring tomorrow").

Fatigue and lack of motivation were common in Years 10–12, with one tutor noting, "He was very tired and lost focus multiple times; homework was not attempted."

Missed assignments often meant less time spent on feedback and consolidation.

Recent Achievements

One Fairfield Heights tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now comfortably brings up questions during lessons, making it easier to address misunderstandings on the spot.

In Year 8 maths, a student managed to complete all their homework this week and caught most of their earlier errors without prompting—something they struggled with last term.

Meanwhile, a primary school student finally worked through subtraction strategies independently after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance; this time, he finished the worksheet on his own without waiting for hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Smithfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gertrude's Catholic Primary School.
