A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

I consider effective communication to be the most important thing a tutor can have for a student, as this one quality filters into all aspects of the job as a tutor. This allows the tutor to gain an understanding of the specific goals or concerns of the student to then maximise the use of sessions, allowing for substantial growth. I believe my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while developing their understanding of the subject, not simply answering the questions for them which could create a false sense of confidence. My strengths are patience, clear communication, and the ability to explain concepts in different ways depending on how a…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

I think a tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe strongly that…

The most important thing I can do for a student is be flexible and patient with them and build a newfound sense of confidence. Every person learns differently, some may struggle more in certain aspects than others and need just that little bit of extra help for them to comprehend what they're learning or grasp a concept. Being the avenue for that…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate a student's success, whether it is big or small. It builds a student's confidence and motivation to keep learning. For example, I would acknowledge their success or completion of goal right away with specific praise, like "I'm really proud of how you stayed focused on that…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect with a…

I believe creating a comfortable environment for the student to thrive in, and being able to adapt to different students learning styles are among the most important things a tutor can do. I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer them unconditional support. From this support comes a relationship of trust, within which the best teaching can occur. When students trust tutors, they become more engaged and benefit from intellectual discussions about the content. Additionally, the students feel motivated and…

Inside FairlightTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jerry worked on converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, then applied these skills to solve profit and loss and GST problems.

In Year 9, Amelie focused on simplifying surds as well as multiplying and dividing surds using practice worksheets for consolidation.

Meanwhile, Clara in Year 12 tackled exam-style questions involving loans and annuities, followed by revision of the normal distribution with emphasis on calculating mean and standard deviation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, a student frequently omitted working out in exams, leading to lost marks even when answers were correct; as one tutor noted, "he lost a lot of marks in his exam as he did not show his working out."

This habit also surfaced during lessons on algebra and linear graphs—working too quickly meant calculation errors slipped through unchecked.

In upper primary English, another student struggled to identify verbs in context despite understanding the concept intuitively; difficulty arose from not connecting instructions to examples.

Without clear written steps or focused revision strategies, students spent extra time retracing work rather than progressing confidently.

Recent Achievements

A Fairlight tutor noticed that Clara, a Year 12 student, has started tackling past exam papers on her own initiative and now explains tricky network problems out loud to check her thinking—a big shift from when she'd quietly avoid these questions.

In Year 9, Jerry recently began setting out his algebra working much more clearly and takes time with difficult questions before asking for help, rather than rushing or skipping them.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has begun developing her own strategies for times tables after struggling to recall them quickly just a few weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Manly West Public School.
