Most importantly have fun while learning. I am very creative with my teaching as every student has different pace of learning and solving things. Since I am a…

To provide adequate work to excel the child’s knowledge in the unfamiliar area. My strengths are that I am extremely patient, and that I understand what children find interesting and not…

A tutor's role gets more prominent when s/he tries to enable the learner to understand the language and use the language in the real world. Put it simply, the learner should be enabled to understand English, analyse it, speak it and more importantly use the English functions in the right place. For instance, in sessions with learners, I will…

At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

I believe that tutors need to not only teach topics to students, but they must also be able to build the students confidence in their progress. Learning must be interesting and engaging as students must enjoy the process of learning for them to fully understand the topics as they will only peform well in engaging discussions. Adapting to the…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is understanding the pace the student requires and not focusing on how much a student can complete in a set time. I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to develop the student's critical thinking skills so that when they continue to study or whatever they want to achieve in life, they have the skills to keep learning and teaching themselves. A tutor must not only give a student the confidence and encouragement needed to learn properly, but…

I would consider an ongoing \'positive reinforcement and encouragement\' to student is crucial for their success. Students love to be motivated in learning and they love to feel loved and supported in their learning journey. We as tutors are not just there to teach them what to do, but as their motivators to guide and encourage, so that they can…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

A tutor can inspire and instill self belief/self esteem back into a student. A tutor can motivate students to study hard and receive good marks. When students receive good marks the student gains self esteem and confidence and ultimately happiness (which akes tutoring very rewarding). A tutor can be a good role model and show students not only the…

After the first session I gave Matt some feedback about Mia (via Text). Matt was open to my feedback about Mia’s learning style, and I feel he listened and implemented during the second session. Mia walked away feeling more confident/ comfortable after the second session.
Karen, Fawkner

Inside FawknerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Harry concentrated on algebra skills, working through expressions and equations to build confidence.

For Year 10, recent sessions addressed data distributions by finding the five number summary (including IQR, median, Q1, and Q3), constructing box plots, and applying the 68–95–99.7% rule for normal distributions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student practised multiplication using area models and explored equivalent fractions through hands-on activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 General Maths, one student struggled to locate formulas in a disorganised bound reference book, leading to wasted time during practice SACs—"he spent several minutes flipping pages for the right formula."

In a Year 10 statistics lesson, another student relied heavily on calculators and spreadsheets rather than practicing manual quartile calculations, risking gaps in understanding under exam conditions.

A primary student frequently left homework incomplete and needed prompting to edit written work; when asked to revise spelling errors, "he understood what was wrong but didn't correct it without help," resulting in repeated mistakes on similar tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Fawkner tutor recently noticed Charlize, a Year 12 student, move from confusion to confidently identifying outliers and calculating interquartile ranges using box plots—something she struggled with at the start.

In Year 8 maths, Emmanuel now works through new concepts after just one example and has begun tackling similar questions independently instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Alex in primary school is showing real initiative: he self-corrects punctuation errors during writing tasks and is starting to choose more complex sentence structures on his own. Last session, he finished his letter draft without needing reminders about capital letters or full stops.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fawkner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Matthew's School.
