I believe building an understanding about the student and the ways in which they learn best is what separates a tutor from a textbook. The personal skills needed to determine that are most important as it then allows the customisation of learning. Because my understanding of concepts are very logical, I am able to give explanations depending on…

Well, one is to build the student's confidence! I want them to be able to think independently and instil in their minds to avoid the use of AI tools like ChatGPT. I want to create a comfortable space where they can make mistakes and learn from them! A good tutor does not just give the answers, and I'd guide them to find the answers themselves. 1:1…

Tutors must have an understanding of how their students learn and be able to adapt to that teaching style. As well as the tutors ability to connect with their student in order to create a more comfortable learning environment. I demonstrate a lot of patience when working with students as it is important to know that different people learn…

One thing that I believe in is that no student is slow or unable to understand something; anyone can understand and do anything as long as they are taught how to. The process of learning is what may vary from person to person. My core strength would be the ability to explain any concept, no matter how complex. I can break it down to simple bits…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to provide different of point of views to a student. I realized that the best tutors are not the one that knows the most but the ones that gives the best point of view to a subject to a student. My favourite teacher used to say, study hard but also study smart. A great tutor would form a good…

Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. The tutor should be really compassionate to their students and is always there whenever the student needs help. Even though the tutor is busy and tired, a wise tutor…

Observing gradual progress in a student for a subject they struggle with patience is considered important . Considering tutoring as a responsibility more than a profession can create a perfect mindset for a tutor to indulge a student into the magic of learning. Creating interest and having a deep knowledge of what been taught is equally…

The important thing is to understand the needs of the student by being open to discussions. Also, keep a track of the student's progress and celebrate the success of the student, which in turn makes the student feel confident. I think my empathy towards my students is my strength. I can quickly adapt and understand their situation and help them…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, mentally (on an academic level) and emotionally. This includes ensuring that the student actually comprehends the work - rather than just saying so. Just as importantly, a tutor must be able to emotionally support the student, making sure they are comfortable enough to voice their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. Often at a young age if we fail to grasp a concept it can damage our self-confidence. Therefore it is a tutor's responsibility to bring out the 'never give up'attitude in students and motivate them to continue trying until they can overcome the hurdle. Tutors should…

I think improving a student's confidence is the most important thing. I've just seen so many students in the past give up when they see a problem, but if you can teach them to push past this it helps them in this class and in future problem solving scenarios. I make tutoring fun or at least I try my best :) I will make jokes and generally try not…

Have patience and make sure that the student actually understands what they're saying. It can be easy for students to just nod along and agree with everything so it's important they're honest with you and say something when they don't understand I think my strengths as a tutor is my patience and being able to find a way to teach something so that…

I consider the most thing a tutor can do for a student is personalisation and to instill belief in the students' capability to continue improving and bettering themselves. The 'most important' aspect for any particular student should also be personalised to the student, whether it is identifying gaps in their knowledge, honing the fundamentals of…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to develop their critical thinking ability, where the student learn to think for themselves, through which one could also effectively develop the art of asking questions and learning. The most important thing a tutor can do is to show real life examples or threads that the student can relate to while learning new concepts. The learning in such an approach will lead to a properly spun network of knowledge with related real-life examples which will be easier to recollect for the student. And always make sure to feed what the…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
