A tutor should be a mentor for students. It is the responsibility of a tutor to provide subject matter and help a student excel in the subject while understanding the student's standard, capabilities and needs. I can make a student independent and help the student for his/her personal growth too. The most important things a tutor can do for a…

Helping them grow, both academically and in extracurricular aspects. Study wise, making sure they understand the concept of the question instead of 'how to do the question'; know what the formula represents not what the formula is. Also using the wisdom I have gained throughout the years to guide them in problem solving in things that are outside…

Be able to be flexible, whether its with timing of lessons, being able to be flexible with content and being flexible to look at perspectives and change how they approach different kids who all learn in different manners. My strengths are probably my abilities to reframe topics to kids who don't understand the prompts -- being able to show them a…

Everybody learns differently, and trying to apply the same approach to everyone is going to leave students struggling and frustrated. I adapt my teaching style to the way a student learns, and don't enforce a certain way of thinking - instead, I equip them with the tools to approach any problem in a way that works for them. I have two years'…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is support them academically, as well as personally. I believe that it is vital to approach each student holistically, catering for each individual in accordance with their personal needs. Secondly, I believe it is important that students are supported according to their own goals,…

I believe that communication skills and patience is most crucial. Being able to explain a hard subject to simpler words so a student can understand is one of the most essential thing I figured throughout my tutoring experiences. Tutors should also be ready to answer any questions asked by students. I am capable of elaborating subjects, I adapt and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel like they can actually handle the work on their own. It Is easy to just give someone the answers, but that doesn't help them in the long run. Since I'm majoring in psychology, I try to focus on building their confidence and helping them get past that "mental block" where they…

Ultimately, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give the student a passion for learning, as well as strong study methods. This way, in the future, the student is able to perform well academically in an independent manner. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor would be that I make tutoring sessions fun and…

I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is be a student's number one supporter. School fills you with enough doubt as is, so it is imperative to create a safe learning environment for them to make mistakes in order to grow. This goes hand in hand with being a role model whom they can be inspired & motivated by and look up to. I believe…

Encourage them. It is important to make a student feel like they are doing well. Everyone needs encouragement, especially someone who is already struggling. The most important thing a tutor can do is make sure they don't generalize their teaching across all students. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
