In my opinion, making the student feel comfortable is key to establishing a healthy and optimistic relationship with learning. The teaching space needs to be free of judgement and should feel inclusive. A one-size-fits-all method of teaching disregards every student's unique circumstances so the tutor should make an active effort to empathise with…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to be understanding and friendly to them so that they don't hesitate to share their problems. focusing more on the topics they find difficult to understand and being there for them for as long as they need is the best thing a tutor can do. Taking their time to explain a method or topic properly in a way that the students understand. I think this is important because if the students don't clearly understand the process in which they need to apply it, then the method isn't useful. But that method is not going to be the same for each student My skills would be my patience and…

Pretty much answered this in the first question, but essentially, to help the student to develop the skills, methods and confidence to go to the next level in their academic journey. As I am very familiar and comfortable with the subject matter, I am able to quickly break it down and explain it in simple terms to the student. Moreover, most times,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I think it is most important to be patient with the students and to ensure they properly understand the concepts being taught before moving onto the next topic. You must also be understanding and empathic with the students to show you can appreciate where they are coming from or why they are thinking a certain way whether it is in the way they…

Successful tutors can build strong, personal relationships with their students. As they can teach to the student's strengths, they are able to minimize the student's weaknesses. For a student, the most essential thing a tutor can do is imparting complete knowledge as half knowledge is dangerous. So, when a child is fully aware of something, he can be confident enough to explore more beyond his imagination. A tutor must be resilient enough to teach students in the best way. I think it would be the unlimited support and confidence the tutor has for their student as well as their passion for their subject they are teaching. If the student feels like their tutor listens to them and has confidence in their potential, then in due time, the student will likely flourish and develop their abilities. A lot of the time…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

Fostering an environment of growth is key: tutors need to encourage the student to ask questions, set realistic standards and recognise failure as the opportunity to learn. Seeing these mindsets shift within students is extremely rewarding as a teacher. In my experience of tutoring, it is less about showing the student what you know and…

Inside FootscrayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia focused on solving problems involving the volume of cylinders and explored area and circumference of circles, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

In Year 8, Liam practiced linear relationships by plotting equations on coordinate grids and worked through questions on finding equations of lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ava reviewed angle types—such as complementary and supplementary angles—and estimated degrees using protractors for hands-on learning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 trigonometry, a student hesitated to attempt challenging problems, focusing mainly on familiar examples—this limited exposure to multi-step scenarios.

For a Year 3 multiplication task, over-reliance on counting rather than recalling tables slowed progress and led to errors ("Need to learn by heart the multiplication table").

In Year 10 data evaluation, incomplete practice with interpreting graphs meant patterns were sometimes missed.

During Year 8 decimal work, one tutor noted: "Need to be more careful while counting the number to put the decimal point and index number." These process gaps often left some questions unanswered or concepts only partly grasped in-session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Footscray noticed a big shift with one high school student who, after struggling to estimate angles without tools, now confidently judges them by eye and checks his work independently.

Another Year 9 student who used to hesitate when stuck on problems has started raising questions mid-session and fixing mistakes right away, instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally cleared up confusion about range and median—after weeks of guessing, he now explains the difference out loud before solving each problem.

Last week, one finished all his homework in just 20 minutes and asked for extra exercises.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Barkly Campus.
