The most important thing I can do as a tutor is foster a sense of confidence and independence in a student. While academic guidance is essential, I make it a priority to create a supportive and non-judgmental space which encourages students to engage more actively in their learning. I also recognise that every student learns differently, so I…

As a tutor, I can teach concepts and skills from a different perspective to what the student learns in a classroom. As a tutor, I get to spend a lot of time one-on-one with students, which means I can specifically understand individual needs and adjust my approach accordingly. This means that students can get the most out of their sessions with…

I think it's important for tutors to make students feel comfortable asking any questions they have no matter how simple or challenging. From my experience it is important for any kind of teacher to create a positive environment for learning so the students can get the most out of their education. I feel I am good at keeping things interesting and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give out all the knowledge they have and teach them beyond the lessons of a book and make the learning journey enjoyable for them. Patience and ready to help nature are my strengths as a tutor because when you are in the teaching phase you need to have the patience to answer even the…

Not only to help them with academics as the main goal of a tutor, but also to be a friend and have positive influence on them. Attitude can actually make the difference. Strength: Communication. Not only tutoring, all jobs need effective communication. I believe I can make the students understand, I have tutored before and the students really…

Similar to my strengths, I think a tutor needs to be flexible and patient with any and every student that they teach. A stubborn tutor that doesn't try to adapt to each student's personal needs or preferences won't be effective in their teaching, and a similar result follows for an impatient tutor. Additionally, any tutor should have a large bank…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to work out their style of learning, may that be using analogies or diagrams, and showing them the same knowledge in a way that works for them. I believe an individual stylised method for learning results in the highest levels of success as we all learn differently. I think my…

For me the most important aspect of being a tutor is that I must be able to maintain my students motivation. Somewhat like a personal trainer. Most clients hire a personal trainer not solely for their instruction but for their motivation and I belive this also applies in tutoring. Secondly a tutor must be able to explain concepts and ideas on the…

Understanding that no 2 students are the same. Every student is very different and has different methods of learning. Through questioning and perhaps trial and error, it's important for the tutor to decipher what method works best for the student, what the students' weaknesses and strengths are, and use such information to create a tailored…

I think the most important duty as a tutor is to be understanding of a student's difficulties when they are learning and to ensure they never feel as if they are incompetent if they are ever struggling with a new concept. I consider confidence building to be a priority for a tutor. If a student is not confident in their own abilities, they will not be able to grow as a learner and eventually take on the more challenging problems themselves. A pivotal element in building confidence in students is creating a friendly and welcoming environment in which they can reach…

I reckon the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student is spending time with them, listening, sympathising, effectively communicating and building connections with them. School curriculum is not designed for any particular students, so many of them can't study the way they find the most suitable and easiest for them, resulting in the need…

Ultimately, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give the student a passion for learning, as well as strong study methods. This way, in the future, the student is able to perform well academically in an independent manner. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor would be that I make tutoring sessions fun and…

The most important things that one can do for a student is make the learning material relatable to them. Which means that giving real world examples and relating the material to something of importance. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build the student’s confidence, and help them develop independent learning skills. The most important things a tutor can do are fostering learning environment, and good explanations to suit students' individual learning needs. Inside GardenvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nikki focused on solving real-world division problems like calculating cost per kilogram and interpreting results in full sentences, as well as practising key elements of showing working and reasoning.

Year 8 student Celia worked through index laws using examples to solidify understanding, and revised algebraic equations ahead of her test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Bonnie tackled trigonometry topics including sin/cos/tan ratios and the Pythagoras theorem, with extra attention on applying formulas to a variety of question types.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's working was repeatedly erased instead of crossed out during scientific notation tasks—"This will waste a lot of time especially during tests," as noted by the tutor.

In Year 11, missing key details in text-heavy exam questions led to confusion when indirect information was required, not just direct calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled to keep their answers organized in multi-step fraction problems; they tended to panic when timed and lost track of steps.

For a senior English essay, lack of planning made it hard for ideas to flow smoothly between paragraphs, leaving arguments disconnected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Gardenvale noticed a big change with Celia, a high school student who used to hesitate when faced with new algebraic laws—now she's not only picking them up quickly but also applying them independently during sessions.

In another case, Bonnie, also in high school, showed real initiative by pinpointing which maths topics she struggled with before her exam and then confidently using her CAS calculator to tackle those questions on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently surprised her tutor by clearly writing down every division question she found confusing instead of skipping them, making it easier to review and master those tricky spots together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Leibler Yavneh College.
