It is important that a tutor empathizes with the students and provide them vivid and interesting perspectives about the subjects which goes beyond school learning. I think the most important thing about being a tutor is meeting your students on their terms. What I mean by that is that you never make them feel stupid for not knowing, or not understanding something. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help not feel embarrassed by the gaps in their knowledge, and work with them…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

Inside GlenhavenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Maya focused on critical path analysis for project management scenarios and practiced advanced statistics skills including calculating z-scores, standard deviation, and mean.

Year 11 student Oliver completed past HSC geometry and probability questions, working through selective school exam papers to strengthen understanding of key problem types.

For Year 9, Ethan revised area and volume calculations along with probability concepts using a mix of recent exam papers to build confidence for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, one student missed several lessons due to TAFE commitments and now faces a backlog of material to catch up on—this has led to gaps in exam preparation, as noted: "Should catch up on lessons missed out due to TAFE asap."

A Year 8 student consistently avoided showing full working for algebra questions; the tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 4, another learner forgot about a scheduled lesson entirely. These moments meant time was spent recovering lost ground or correcting avoidable mistakes instead of moving forward with new content.

Recent Achievements

A Glenhaven tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with probability questions now independently draws accurate probability trees after just a brief demonstration.

In another session, a Year 9 student who once waited for hints began practicing past exam papers on her own initiative, identifying her weak spots before lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students surprised their tutor by tackling long division worksheets confidently on the very first attempt—a big shift from last term's nervousness around new maths topics. The lesson ended with her solving every question without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dural Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenhaven Public School.
