I believe the most important things a tutor can do is be authentic with a student while also creating a supportive learning environment. While they should improve the students' capabilities and foster confidence, it is key for them to acknowledge their weaknesses and mistakes so the student is able to reflect on them and make sure to not neglect…

A tutor must give confidence to the student that they can do well in a subject, regardless of their abilities. At the same time, a tutor must encourage the student to put in the work to succeed in the subject by instilling a love for the subject within student. A tutor must also be able to explain concepts in an easily digestible manner so…

The most important thing for a tutor is to not feed the student to information but to guide them as they learn. It's to teach the students how to learn independently and invoke within them a passion and a want for more learning and knowledge. To show students that studying is not a chore but a tool and a privilege that they can use. As a young…

In my view, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a deep understanding of the subject matter. This means going beyond simply helping them complete assignments and prepare for exams, and instead working with them to build a foundation of knowledge and skills that they can apply to future challenges. A good…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them. By getting to know a student's personality and how they work generally and how they are feeling to work on the day really helps in moving the class along smoothly whilst also keeping a good rapport with the student. A tutor's purpose is to cover a student's weak points that they may not be able to understand in school. They need to be able to effectively supplement a student and allow them to reach their full potential. I believe my ability to draw on my own experiences in order to explain difficult concepts more easily. This also combines with my…

A tutor's role goes beyond just imparting knowledge. They should build confidence and self-belief, create a personalized and supportive learning environment, and encourage active learning and critical thinking. Clear explanations, achievable goals, and constructive feedback are essential. A tutor should also foster independence, provide guidance…

Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. When students feel confident, they’re more open to learning and tackling challenges. A good tutor creates a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without fear of judgment. It’s also about making lessons relatable and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put time and effort into the learning experience. In particular, for one on one tutoring, the tutor must be able to go at a pace that suits the student and adapt lesson plans according to the student. I think being a mentor is one of the most important thing a tutor can do. I believe that to be a good mentor, a tutor should be able to share their own experiences and make the student comfortable. I think it is also crucial to tell students that you also find some concepts hard initially, however, was able to grasp it by putting in the time and…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the needs of each student and adapt their teaching style in order to maximise the benefits that the student can get from tutoring. It is extremely important that when the student is faced with a difficult question, they are able to see many potential methods to attempt it. As such I consider the most important thing that a tutor can do it expand the understanding of their student so much so that they can see these multiple methods by themselves and adapt their thinking to the…

Build their confidence; I think once a student has confidence in themselves, and trust that they have what it takes to tackle even a small part of a subject, their view of that subject completely shifts, and most often it makes learning more enjoyable. That inner confidence also makes it more likely they work harder and succeed, as well as overall…

Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the student leaves without any questions. Inside GlenwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aryan worked through fraction operations—adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions—and practised connecting percentages to decimals and fractions.

For Year 8, Alisha focused on finding the surface areas and volumes of composite solids using notes and worksheets, along with reviewing formulas for prisms.

In senior secondary, Maya (Year 11) completed HSC exam preparation by tackling varied past paper questions and clarifying major doubts in topics including trigonometry and statistics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra sessions, a student often left working incomplete when solving equations, which made it hard to spot where misunderstandings with variables arose. As one tutor observed, "she needs to talk aloud so the tutor can know which areas need improvement."

In a senior geometry lesson (Year 11), revision focused mostly on easier past exam questions rather than tackling harder bearings and proof problems—missing a chance to build deeper confidence before assessments.

A Year 7 student avoided writing out steps for fraction addition, leading to repeated denominator errors and confusion about simplifying answers during timed practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenwood noticed a Year 10 student who previously struggled with scatter plots now drawing them accurately and sharing that he'd received high marks on his topic test.

In a senior session, another student who tended to rely heavily on the tutor's help for algebra was able to tackle multi-step questions solo after a few alternate explanations—solving harder problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, during primary tutoring, one child who rarely asked questions started pausing to clarify things mid-task instead of pushing through confused, showing real initiative. The last session ended with her confidently converting fractions both ways on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanhope Garden Library/ Dennis Johnson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caddies Creek Public School.
