The most important thing a tutor can do is inspire confidence. Within the class, it is a safe space for the student to talk about their short comings or lack of understanding. It is then the tutors job to help the student and breed confidence. This then extends out of the class and into the exam hall. My biggest strength is empathy and being able…

The most important thing by far is engagement. Tutoring is good, although it can only do so much if the students interest is elsewhere. The best thing a tutor can do is help the student engage more in school as the student will spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% with a tutor so using that 80% to your advantage is the most important…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build their self-confidence to a stage where they do not give up on anything to do with learning. Furthermore, a tutor can provide a student an opportunity to ask questions that have been unanswered by teachers at school and most importantly a tutor can act as a mentor for a student who…

Being active when students are in need the most, answering questions as students ask them. It is important to ensure the student feels completely fine to express themselves and ask tutors any questions they may have, during and after the lesson. A tutor should be attentive and ensure the student has no questions before progressing further. I feel…

I believe one of the most important things a Tutor can do for a student is to be approachable and be open to questions as students don’t learn if they don’t ask questions. Being approachable opens up a lot of opportunity for students to learn and build up on the knowledge as if a student is afraid to ask a Tutor a question, that defeats the…

Being available, reliable, and understanding. I believe that having the ability to cater to an individual is also extremely important; realising that not everyone has the same capacity to learn. I think I'm quite patient and able to work with students as opposed to instructing them, the main focus being on understanding their individual needs and…

Important aspect a tutor can do for a student is to believe in their learning and being patience with the improvement of the student. Another…

Flexibility and encouragement are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. There is no doubt that every student learns and engages with academic content in a different way. Firstly, a tutor must be kind and caring of the student's situation, and must be able to quickly determine the best method of teaching for that particular student. Only then can the tutor raise the motivation and enthusiasm of the student which is crucial in allowing them to learn at the optimum level. Once they are learning at this level, their…

Support. Providing a great amount of support and motivation is crucial for a student’s education path. Without this, a lack of drive would occur which is detrimental to their learning, ultimately affecting their peers around them which acts like the domino effect. Inside GlenwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aryan worked through fraction operations—adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions—and practised connecting percentages to decimals and fractions.

For Year 8, Alisha focused on finding the surface areas and volumes of composite solids using notes and worksheets, along with reviewing formulas for prisms.

In senior secondary, Maya (Year 11) completed HSC exam preparation by tackling varied past paper questions and clarifying major doubts in topics including trigonometry and statistics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra sessions, a student often left working incomplete when solving equations, which made it hard to spot where misunderstandings with variables arose. As one tutor observed, "she needs to talk aloud so the tutor can know which areas need improvement."

In a senior geometry lesson (Year 11), revision focused mostly on easier past exam questions rather than tackling harder bearings and proof problems—missing a chance to build deeper confidence before assessments.

A Year 7 student avoided writing out steps for fraction addition, leading to repeated denominator errors and confusion about simplifying answers during timed practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenwood noticed a Year 10 student who previously struggled with scatter plots now drawing them accurately and sharing that he'd received high marks on his topic test.

In a senior session, another student who tended to rely heavily on the tutor's help for algebra was able to tackle multi-step questions solo after a few alternate explanations—solving harder problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, during primary tutoring, one child who rarely asked questions started pausing to clarify things mid-task instead of pushing through confused, showing real initiative. The last session ended with her confidently converting fractions both ways on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanhope Garden Library/ Dennis Johnson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caddies Creek Public School.
