The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Students already have bounds of pressure heaped on them, academic, parental, administrative, personal, etc. and sometimes all it takes is one Calculus question to bring them to their wit's end. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey and…

Tutors serve a distinct role from teachers and parents, putting them in a unique position to assist learners. Personal relationships are crucial to student achievement; the more attached a student feels to his or her tutor, the more trust and respect the tutor instils in the student, both of which are necessary ingredients for effective learning.…

Most importantly, a student should be motivated and encouraged so that he studies with interest. He should be made to feel that if he failed to understand a concept once, it is perfectly fine and he should keep trying. He should be taught the actual meaning of the word 'Competition' , which is to beat his / her own last performance and not anyone…

Not just teach them the material but to also teach them how to learn. Especially with younger year levels, their needing of a tutor can show that they need help in education as a whole not just a subject. In older year levels that skill of self learning becomes very important. Secondly, I would say to have no stress. Coming into exam or test time,…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. To encourage them to keep going and not give up, because it can get really upsetting to the student if they can't understand a specific thing after some time spent on it. It's important to reassure them that the progress they've made so far has been good and worthwhile, and that everyone's learning paces are different. Most importantly, it's…

Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Being more approachable and trying to match their level of understanding to find a better approach for studying is important. We were very happy with the tutor Shan and hope to work with him in the next two terms. He has quickly caught on to the requirements that need to be met for our daughter Izabella.
Beata, Greenwith

Inside GreenwithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Dominic focused on understanding integers and evaluating numeric expressions, then practiced converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

For Year 10, Abigail tackled techniques for factoring quadratic expressions in different formats and explored early concepts in statistics, including key terminology.

Meanwhile, Laura in Year 12 worked through rules for differentiation with various functions and reviewed foundational ideas around antiderivatives and integrals.

Recent Challenges

Across the senior levels, a Year 12 student preparing for exams was noted as "working on clarifying concepts," but did not consistently seek or apply feedback on earlier misunderstandings in calculus and algebra, sometimes moving forward without resolving foundational gaps.

In Year 8, one student frequently asked for extra problems during sessions but occasionally overlooked reviewing their own working when errors were found in fraction operations—"he prefers to try another question rather than check his steps." This pattern led to repeated mistakes instead of building lasting confidence from corrections made on the spot.

Recent Achievements

A Greenwith tutor recently noticed that Dominic, a Year 10 student, has shifted from waiting passively for instruction to actively requesting extra practice—especially after tackling frequency distributions and graphing.

Abigail in Year 11 used to hesitate when faced with tricky probability rules but now quickly recognises patterns and applies them independently, only needing an occasional hint.

In a younger session, Laura (Year 5) who previously avoided asking for help, now brings specific questions forward for clarification before moving on.

Last week, Dominic finished a set of fraction conversions without any prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Salisbury Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Hope School.
