Any tutor, mentor, educator, or teacher all have something different to offer their students: but the goal is the same and it should be this: to help empower those who can't empower themselves in order to bring forth the best version of that individual into the world. It is through education, knowledge and the reciprocation of knowledge that…

The most important thing as a tutor is to encourage students to ask as many questions as possible. It is very important to provide them that environment and to gain their trust that you will provide them the right solution. As a tutor, I think, my biggest strength is being patient with my students. Also, that I like to share my knowledge with my…

I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due to which…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do is be patient with a student, ensure that the student understands the concepts well and not make the student feel inferior or less knowledgeable if understanding a concept takes time. A tutor should be morally supportive and make the student feel at ease because the best study done is a…

Another important thing is that all children should not be left behind, as I tutor, he/she should move together at the pace of students and that no one should be left out.…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

I think one of the biggest things a tutor should be doing is listening to their student: their learning style, where they get stuck, and what they need to help them improve. Often students are not sufficiently heard in the classroom and it means they do not have their specific needs catered. That should be at the core of tutoring. I am a very…

Inside Guildford WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zahra focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting mixed fractions, using visual models for clarity.

Year 6 student Arjun tackled long division and multi-digit multiplication, along with simplifying equivalent fractions through step-by-step breakdowns.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Ava practised converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages, then applied these skills to real-world scenarios like interpreting data measurements.

Recent Challenges

During Year 8 English essay planning, a student struggled to structure responses and link examples to the main argument—often stopping mid-sentence out of uncertainty, as noted: "He needs improvement in writing his sentences so that the marker knows what he is talking about."

In Year 10 Mathematics, another student frequently misread multi-step worded problems ("difference between" vs. "between them"), leading to lost marks despite understanding the math itself; exam timing was also an issue.

In Year 4, distraction by things outside the window meant instructions were missed and double-digit subtraction tasks remained incomplete before time ran out.

Recent Achievements

One Guildford West tutor noted a Year 10 student who previously guessed at answers is now writing out each step for addition problems, showing real patience and methodical thinking.

In a recent high school English session, a student who once hesitated to share ideas began coming up with original points when structuring an exposition.

Another win from the lesson notes: a Year 6 student, who used to skip checking her work, has started backchecking her answers independently and is catching small mistakes herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Guildford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Primary School.
