The most important things a tutor can do for their student are to build their confidence, tailor their teaching to the student’s individual needs, and foster a supportive learning environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions. A tutor should also focus on clarifying difficult concepts, providing consistent feedback, and…

As a student who has had tutors in the past, I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for their student is to be there for them when they need help and assistance. Time is obviously very valuable, but I realised that I appreciated those tutors who went above and beyond to ensure that I received the help that I needed. Further,…

A tutor has his student's career in hand. If a tutor wants, he can change the future of a child by showing him the right direction. A tutor can positively affect the attitude of a student towards his life by motivating him at early stages of life in school. I am highly motivated to help students build up their future career and i only want one…

Make a student feel supported and safe. Whether the student wants the top marks or just wants to pass, they need to feel like someone genuinely wants to help. Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. Personally the experiences that I have taken with me from systems of education have been how applicable the framework of learning is to other facets of the reasoning process.…

In my opinion, a tutor should foster a safe and encouraging space for learning, build students’ confidence, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. It’s about empowering students, not just teaching content. In fact, implementing teaching strategies to adapt to the student's learning style is crucial for better comprehension.…

To truly let the students to understand concepts. Yes, achieving high marks and grades is important, but it shouldn't override the understanding of concepts in curriculums. It is important to be patient and a good listener. Students learn at their own pace and you cannot push them. Even if something seems simple to you, for the student it might not be. Being a good listener means not dominating the conversation. Allow the students to ask questions and give the students plenty of time to answer your questions.…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. My son can't wait to have his maths lessons with his tutor every week! She is helping him learn through wonderful and fun ways!
Konstantina, Preston

Inside Heidelberg WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and substitution in more complex equations to build confidence with foundational algebra skills.

In Year 9, Jacob practised graphing parabolas as well as substituting values into quadratic functions, using worked examples for clarity.

For Year 10, Sam concentrated on solving linear equations and revisited core trigonometric ratios—sine, cosine, and tangent to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often forgot to bring her maths textbook, which meant gaps in reviewing problem areas and "she needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

In a senior class, one student ran out of time during an exam; as the tutor put it, "he missed some simple errors" because he didn't check answers before submitting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student's algebra work was messy and hard to follow—incorrect values crept in when calculations weren't clearly laid out.

Distraction in English led another student to guess answers without reading passages closely.

Recent Achievements

One Heidelberg West tutor noticed Kiera now tackles more complex maths problems without hesitation—just weeks ago she'd often wait for reassurance before starting.

In Year 8, Ollie moved from making frequent mistakes in timed tests to using a standard formula they developed together for negative indices, helping him answer these questions independently and with fewer errors.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school has shifted from being distracted during class to focusing well enough to score 8/8 on his fractions test after struggling with this topic earlier; he completed all the questions accurately on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
