In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. Whether that may be to help them catch up in certain subjects, to reach for top marks for their desired high school or university or in need of motivation to study in creating habits. I believe that the most important thing will be for the tutor…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Being able to understand their source of motivation as well as the areas in which they need the most help is extremely vital as a tutor. I think my strength as a tutor comes from my passion as a teacher. Whilst not having any formal experience tutoring, I know I enjoy…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for their students is to build a relationship. This foundation will help students to have a trust in their tutor and this will encourage them to share their problems. If the tutor understands the exact problem the student is struggling with, then they can alter their teaching techniques according to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. Moreover, it is important for the tutor to align to the goals of the student and help them achieve that. I can explain difficult problems in an easy to understand manner. I explain…

While obviously a tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. Giving a student an interest in the subject will make them improve their grades even by thereself as they will enjoy studying and seek…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. There are few important things a tutor can do their students: -Transfer their extensive knowledge onto their students so they can solve their academic problems. - Be patient and calm, even if they have to repeat something 100 times, they have to make sure that the student is clear about the problem. -Build relationships so that student…

Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
