The most important thing an economics tutor can do for a student is to be empathetic. As much as a tutor can do, they could not change how their students are. Not only does the student have to understand the material, the tutor should understand their students first. One of my strengths as a tutor would be to connect theoretical concepts with…

Teach them how to think independently, and provide them with a way of thinking efficiently. Math is not a discipline in which someone does enough problems and can solve all the problems, but a discipline that requires people to constantly think about questions. So if one only knows to let students do lots of problems then he might not be a good…

The most important thing an economics tutor can do is create an environment in which the student feels comfortable asking questions and encouraging them to work hard and commit to learning. Big class settings can often see some students fall away in the mass, which means the one on one tutoring gives them the opportunity to be the sole focus, and…

I think the most important thing an economics tutor can do for a student is to listen. It is important for a tutor to build a relationship with the students so that tutoring sessions don't become a chore, and the student feels comfortable seeking help with things in these sessions. I feel that an economics tutor can basically change a student's perception to a particular subject. A tutor has the power to build the foundations of a subject in a simplified and innovative way such that it is comprehended easily by the students. When it comes to teaching new concepts, I seldom go by the book. I think it is more important to give…

I think prioritizing students’ confidence establishment. When I was tutoring one Year 5 boy in Shanghai, I helped the boy to rebuild his confidence clarifying the knowledge structure and outlining every day possible targets with an interactive approach. The boy began to be vigorous in his studies and he scored 93/100 from 70/100 in his final.…

Inside HolderTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked on solving simultaneous equations using elimination and also found the area of circles and parallelograms, applying these concepts to volume calculations for cylinders and prisms.

In Year 10, Emily focused on proofs of congruent and similar triangles using tests like SSS and RHS, including calculating scaling factors for similar figures.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled balancing chemical and net-ionic equations, practiced naming polyatomic ions, and discussed solubility rules through real experimental observations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, "he needed extra time to balance equations," showing that exam-style speed is a challenge when steps aren't automatic.

In Year 9 Maths, reliance on calculators for basic multiplication and squared numbers slowed progress—"required calculator for simple multiplying (x3 etc.)," which interrupted problem-solving flow during practice tests.

A Year 7 student preparing essays struggled with organization; "bring notebook to next session" was set as an action after materials were forgotten.

Meanwhile, in upper primary, a spelling test result of 40% highlighted avoidance of using a dictionary, leading to repeated misspellings in writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Holder tutor noticed a big shift with Sami, a Year 10 student who recently raised his maths exam score from 50% to 71% after creating his own practice questions and sticking to a regular study routine—he'd previously struggled just to pass.

In a senior chemistry session, the student who used to hesitate over polyatomic ions now identifies them correctly in equations and balances chemical reactions more quickly.

Meanwhile, during primary tutoring, Samuel moved from frequent mistakes in area and perimeter tasks to finishing all ten problems on his own without any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Jude's Primary School.
