I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are putting themselves in the shoes of the student, actively listening to their needs, and being more than just a supervisor who has the answers - but rather a guide that takes them along the learning process for them to truly understand the concepts. I believe my strengths as a…

I think as a tutor, it is most important to have patience especially when teaching young bright minds. It is also important to make sure that your students are comfortable so that they can benefit from your teaching. As a tutor and having taught students at various levels, I think my strength as a tutor is to understand the needs of each…

The most important thing is listening to a student and truly understanding their strengths and weaknesses. To me, the role of a tutor transcends the mere transfer of knowledge. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a source of unwavering support, guidance, and inspiration. It's about fostering a profound sense of belief in a student's potential, even when they may doubt themselves. Ultimately, the most important thing a…

Above all else, I think a tutor can give a student confidence in whatever work students have due. Once their confidence is built up, they will respond better to not just tutoring outside, but also teaching in the classroom and result to a deeper understanding of the content. I think I am well versed in most subjects, and am an excellent…

I believe a good tutor has the ability to transcend their role as a tutor and become a role model for their students. Further, helping a student overcome their fears or challenges for a particular subject is incredibly helpful. I am able to connect with my students and understand their issues from their perspective. This allows me to curate my…

The most important thing a tutor does for a student is helping them become more confident, so that they have faith in their own abilities and performance. This starts by simplifying the content and explaining it in a way that the student can understand, then building this up so they can face the hardest of questions. It is about equipping them…

Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make the student feel truly listened to. When a student feels heard and understood, they gain confidence. Being understanding and open minded may perhaps be the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Every student has varying strengths and limits and thus following the same approach may not have the desired result. Thus, being patient and having more than one explanation may prove in handy and help make a student develop trust in the…

Inside HughesdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Harry revised core trigonometry concepts and completed a past VCE exam under timed conditions.

A Year 10 student focused on matrix arithmetic, working through examples of both multiplication and transformations using visual aids.

For Year 6, Zara practised converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and solved problems involving telling the time on analogue clocks, including interpreting phrases like "quarter to" and "half past."

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student "occasionally skipped through a question and made an error"—not showing all working led to repeated mistakes in algebraic tasks, which slowed progress during revision.

For a Year 10 student revising domain and range, relying mainly on visual memory rather than written notes meant graph interpretation errors lingered.

In English (Year 7), essay writing suffered because ideas weren't clearly organised; as noted, "she needs to follow the essay plan so she stays on topic."

Meanwhile, unfinished homework in both Years 6 and 11 left key gaps unaddressed before tests—especially with simultaneous equations and creative writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Hughesdale tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to guess at equations but now talks through her reasoning out loud and checks her work before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 boy who'd previously struggled with polynomial long division was able to tackle an application problem without any prompting by the end of the lesson.

Meanwhile, one younger student in Year 4 completed all her homework and even took on some extra-challenging extension questions she would have avoided just weeks ago, finishing them without needing help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh Grammar.
