The tutor should be reliable, and help them unleash their potential. Students should learn that they are able to do things on their own, hence a tutor should also be encouraging. I am able to relate to the students. I can mold my way of teaching into their liking, and I am prepared. I will think of all strategies to teach them…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

As a tutor, the most important thing is to improve the student marks and to be interested and make them enjoy in the subjects they study. Additionally a tutor has to assist and encourage the student in learning processes and help them finish homework. Lastly, explaining the sums instead of learning theories by heart is also a challenging…

A mentor or teacher can teach his/her students about reality and prepare them for various situation that they will face in future. Teacher can act as a friend, a motivator and a helping hand. There are few important things a tutor can do their students: -Transfer their extensive knowledge onto their students so they can solve their academic problems. - Be patient and calm, even if they have to repeat something 100 times, they have to make sure that the student is clear about the problem. -Build relationships so that student…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while providing…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

Inside Huntleys PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on classifying angles and triangles, as well as practicing rounding with larger numbers up to the millions.

Year 8 student Jess focused on trigonometry basics, learning how to use sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangle problems, and practiced rearranging equations for linear relationships using graphing techniques.

Imogen (Year 7) revised adding and subtracting fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numerals, while also tackling lowest common multiples and highest common factors through practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to avoid showing working for algebra and factorisation, especially with "simpler" steps; as a tutor noted, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to small mistakes going unnoticed until the end of questions.

In contrast, a Year 4 student hesitated when faced with mixed times tables and sometimes reverted to finger-counting under pressure—this slowed her progress during mental arithmetic drills.

Both students occasionally lost confidence after minor setbacks, resulting in extra time spent double-checking answers rather than moving forward confidently with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Huntleys Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now methodically checks her multi-step solutions and even corrects minor errors on her own.

In Year 8, another student who once avoided asking questions now regularly seeks clarification during lessons, especially when tackling trickier Pythagoras' theorem problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall times tables can now complete all six times table questions—both in and out of order—with perfect accuracy and has started applying new mental strategies for harder multiplication problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
