The most important thing a biology tutor can do is recognise their students ability level and mould their teaching to that level. This insures that the kids do not feel out of depth, but also they are learning new things every session. I am a very social and friendly person making it easy for me to build strong rapport with the students, and as a…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a biology tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not…

The most important things a biology tutor can do for a student is definitely taking initiative in everything they do. An outstanding tutor should be able take charge and seize the initiative; being a role model, for example, if a student has an exam coming up, a tutor should take the initiative to provide extra sessions; being able to put their…

I think it is very important as a biology tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for his/her student is to provide them assistance on topics outside their course as it not only reduces their stress level thus making it easier for students to focus but also at the same time students can relate to the teacher and thus aiding in their understanding. In my opinion, a biology tutor can act as the bridge between the student and the learning outcome. I feel the job of a tutor is to instill confidence in the child and inculcate a joy of learning the subject. My job as a tutor is to administer lessons to students in such a way to adapt to his capabilities and to meld the subject matter with his…

In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a biology tutor…

Tutors must build the confidence of their students - they can't just teach them the content and expect them to be able to do it on their own - its more than that. A good tutor needs to build the childs confidence so they know they can answer a question. I can do this, I am the type of tutor that wants to support students to do their best and to…

Ultimately, I think a good tutor teaches the student skills that they can utilize in their general learning and subject specific study. A tutor should be in a position to be a mentor to the student and share their experience in relation to studying their subject. This can help the student overcome what can initially be a daunting task as it is a…

To me, the most essential role a biology tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. An empowering…

I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and adapt to their learning style. A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. A tutor should also create a safe environment where the student feels they can ask…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient with each student. Every student has a different starting point and pace, and as tutors, we need to understand this and accommodate for each student. Inside Huntleys PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on classifying angles and triangles, as well as practicing rounding with larger numbers up to the millions.

Year 8 student Jess focused on trigonometry basics, learning how to use sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangle problems, and practiced rearranging equations for linear relationships using graphing techniques.

Imogen (Year 7) revised adding and subtracting fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numerals, while also tackling lowest common multiples and highest common factors through practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to avoid showing working for algebra and factorisation, especially with "simpler" steps; as a tutor noted, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to small mistakes going unnoticed until the end of questions.

In contrast, a Year 4 student hesitated when faced with mixed times tables and sometimes reverted to finger-counting under pressure—this slowed her progress during mental arithmetic drills.

Both students occasionally lost confidence after minor setbacks, resulting in extra time spent double-checking answers rather than moving forward confidently with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Huntleys Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now methodically checks her multi-step solutions and even corrects minor errors on her own.

In Year 8, another student who once avoided asking questions now regularly seeks clarification during lessons, especially when tackling trickier Pythagoras' theorem problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall times tables can now complete all six times table questions—both in and out of order—with perfect accuracy and has started applying new mental strategies for harder multiplication problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
