I think the most important thing is not to do the questions for them but to guide them as they do them so that in the future they will be able to do them by themselves. Giving certain little tricks and clues to help them remember certain things as well can be good as it will help them to remember certain concepts. I think because I also somewhat…

Put yourself in the situation. Think about what you would do as someone who is supposedly better at tackling difficult problems if you stumbled upon the same question. Then convey your thinking to the student. I am patient and I am good at predicting what student may find difficult in a certain exam/test. I am also adaptive to individual dilemmas…

Being on the other side of the spectrum as a tutoring student for many years, I have encountered many tutors whom I have disliked or to this am still grateful for, for the impact they have had on my mindset, which has correspondingly positively affected my academic results. From experience, I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do…

*Assist them in solving their mathematical problems with excellence. *Also, to not always just give the answer straight away, but at times help guide them to the correct answer through giving them hints. *Try help them develop an approach to mathematical problem solving (tutors will obviously not be sitting next to them in the exam) and on how…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to build a strong personal connection with the student and incorporate connections to the student's interest while teaching. It is very important to work on the weaknesses of the student and personalize the teaching accordingly. Following are my strengths as a tutor: 1. My focus on…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in their own ability to succeed. A tutor has the power to inspire and guide academic understanding, with which comes a student's confidence and motivation towards that subject. By forming a positive relationship with tailored lessons, a tutor can create an environment…

Making students regain the confidence they loose on themselves when they see they're not getting the results they expected. Feeling like you're not good enough at something really takes a toll on you and having someone help you through that makes going to class every day and the stress of exams much more bearable. I think I connect with children…

For me, I believe that not only is it important for a tutor to impart academic knowledge upon the student in their lessons, but also to make sure to impart this knowledge in an engaging, creative way and check in, providing extra guidance and exercises as necessary so as much as possible they can truly understand and absorb the concepts. I also…

The first greatest thing that tutor can do for a student is serve as a ladder for the student to progress to next level of life in any kind of circumstances and letting students to take challenges as an opportunity. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

The most important things as a tutor is avoid giving shortcuts to the students. If a student is struggling with a problem, I will let them think first, guide them with small things with only giving slight hints, and help them slowly reach to the answer themselves. Instead of just giving the formula or answers, I focus on helping them understand…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. Inside Huntleys PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on classifying angles and triangles, as well as practicing rounding with larger numbers up to the millions.

Year 8 student Jess focused on trigonometry basics, learning how to use sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangle problems, and practiced rearranging equations for linear relationships using graphing techniques.

Imogen (Year 7) revised adding and subtracting fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numerals, while also tackling lowest common multiples and highest common factors through practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to avoid showing working for algebra and factorisation, especially with "simpler" steps; as a tutor noted, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to small mistakes going unnoticed until the end of questions.

In contrast, a Year 4 student hesitated when faced with mixed times tables and sometimes reverted to finger-counting under pressure—this slowed her progress during mental arithmetic drills.

Both students occasionally lost confidence after minor setbacks, resulting in extra time spent double-checking answers rather than moving forward confidently with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Huntleys Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now methodically checks her multi-step solutions and even corrects minor errors on her own.

In Year 8, another student who once avoided asking questions now regularly seeks clarification during lessons, especially when tackling trickier Pythagoras' theorem problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall times tables can now complete all six times table questions—both in and out of order—with perfect accuracy and has started applying new mental strategies for harder multiplication problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
