It's very important that a tutor can passionately engage with a student and journey with them as they progress. I also think that a tutor's role as a mentor in general is important I am very passionate about it and that allows me to enthusiastically and actively engage with students and try hard to help them understand and appreciate more…

I believe that the best thing a tutor can do is to help students be more self-sufficient in their future learning. It is important for students to develop skills transferrable across topics and subjects in the process of learning and revising new concepts. My strength as a tutor is my ability to accomodate to students' needs. I am always willing…

The most important things I do as a tutor are listening carefully to understand where a student is struggling, explaining concepts in a way that matches their vocabulary and thinking style, and building the right mindset. Knowledge alone can only take a student so far - confidence in their own understanding is what truly helps them improve and…

Understanding the individual needs and learning styles of each student is crucial. Also, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment is key for students to ask questions freely and grasp concepts without worrying about making mistakes. Lastly, finding alternative strategies for solving problems is very important if the student is stuck on a…

Instil confidence, teach problem solving and critical thinking that can be applied across all academic areas, and encourage resilience when students are struggling, reiterating that it is okay to not understand straight away and that persisting is the most important thing. Determining why and how a student may be having trouble with a concept, and…

I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer them quality information and direct feedback on their work and areas of struggle. Additionally, a tutor should be humble such that they do not impose their own ideas onto a student, but rather walk alongside the student's journey of learning. This helps to establish a strong…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. By doing this, you are able to see more clearly the issue that they might be having. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. A tutor should also be able to motivate the student and provide constant encouragement when the student is feeling demotivated. A tutor should also be able to adapt and improve teaching styles depending on the student and their progress. It…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

Be patient, understanding, and be encouraging! High school is not an easy thing, not just because of what you're learning but also because life must go on outside of school. University students face the same problem, so we know that not all days are great days. So as a tutor, you need to be supportive of your student where necessary, so that when…

Inside JindaleeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lily focused on converting between millimetres, centimetres, and metres and practised measurement problems involving unit changes.

For Year 10, James worked through sketching quadratic functions using turning points and factored form, along with solving quadratics by factorisation and the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia tackled derivatives of polynomial and non-polynomial functions as part of her PSMT assignment, also discussing how to structure each sub-heading for clear assignment presentation.

Recent Challenges

Forgetting to bring the school homework book home repeatedly in Year 7 meant missing vital practice and made it hard to pinpoint specific struggles.

A Year 10 student had not completed assigned homework and often could not recall classwork details. "Writing any questions in a separate book and bringing them home should help solidify understanding," noted one tutor.

For Year 12, missing regular revision led to gaps in applying formulas during functions tasks; over-reliance on the graphics calculator limited confidence with graph plotting by hand. This left key skills unpracticed when needed most.

Recent Achievements

One Jindalee tutor saw a big shift in a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask questions—now, he's speaking up whenever unsure and requests to go over tricky concepts again.

In another session, a Year 10 student took real ownership of her chemistry work: after the first question was explained, she completed the next two independently with only light guidance and then tackled later problems entirely on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often guessed answers now labels all her maths work neatly and double-checks for errors before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jindalee State School.
