The best way to help a student learn to assist them in breaking down the problems they face. Whether it be breaking down the question, time management or controlling stress levels, the most important aspect of tutoring is to strengthen their fundamental skills. I have clear speech and an ability to connect with the student, aided them in their…

Even though I have no experience in the field as of yet I think themost important thing a tutor can do for their students is give them time and space to openly ask their questions and clarify any doubts. So being open for questions and allocating time for his/her students is a key aspect of teaching in any level. Understanding the mindset of…

1. Be patient to students. Sometimes tutor need to explain a concept or questions multiple times to students until they understand it. So patience is very important. 2. Tutor should motivate students to exercise. Exercise is very important for students. It can help students know how to use the concept. 3. Tutor can help student build a good way…

I think the most important things a tutor should do for a student is to encourage the student to do better rather than to aim for perfect grades. Every improvement, regardless of the extent, is an improvement and it should be appreciated. A tutor should also prepare for the lessons before hand and have a lesson goal/outline to keep on track. A…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student become more confident and independent in their own ability to learn. A tutor should not simply provide answers, but help students understand why something works and give them the tools to approach unfamiliar problems themselves. That means listening carefully, identifying the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create clarity, and inspire motivation. A good tutor doesn’t just explain answers — they guide students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills. By being patient, encouraging, and consistent, tutors help students feel supported and capable. I also…

Keeping them interested in the subject, making them believe that it's not just about marks, but understanding. Making them to fall in love with the subject. Doing that subject should make them feel happy, not anxious. I focus more on logic and intuition, rather than memorizing. Being someone who used to fail regularly before becoming one of the…

Most important thing would be to provide ample support for self study including guides and worksheets. Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. That way they will be enthusiastic to learn from their…

Being patient and understanding. I would not want my students to just meet more deadlines when it comes to learning. I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. 1. Providing a figure of support - It's important that a student feels comfortable asking their tutor questions and knows that they will be taken seriously no matter how simple the question may seem. 2. Encouragement - It's easy for students to lose confidence when they can't understand something, and as a tutor it's important that you can help…

Inside JolimontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jimmy focused on building confidence while tackling activities to assess maths skills and identify any learning gaps, including revision of factors and subtraction with zeros.

For Year 9, Ava worked through trigonometry basics using practice questions and also reviewed essay structure and language features in poetry analysis.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily prepared for an upcoming maths test by learning to draw and analyse piecewise functions as well as reviewing simultaneous equations and pinpointing areas for exam improvement.

Recent Challenges

Repeatedly did not complete homework, and when tired, needed concepts explained multiple times; "needs to learn how to take proper notes" was a key observation for this Year 8 student.

In Year 11 Chemistry, reliance on looking up formulas slowed progress—there's a pattern of needing more independent recall when faced with new types of questions.

For a Year 5 learner, missed homework meant less time spent on consolidating fraction operations, leaving gaps in later lessons.

In English (Year 10), anxiety about writing ideas clearly led to hesitation putting thoughts onto paper and weaker quote analysis during essays.

Recent Achievements

One Jolimont tutor saw a Year 11 student finally crack trigonometry questions that had stumped her for weeks—she confidently used the "write the rule, substitute and solve" method without prompting.

In a separate high school English session, another student who used to rush through analysis now took time to select quotes thoughtfully and wrote a strong opening for her speech using language devices more effectively.

Meanwhile, in Year 5 maths, Jimmy—who'd previously struggled with borrowing when subtracting from zero—was able to apply the strategy smoothly and completed several problems correctly on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jolimont Primary School.
