It is very important to build a relationship with your students to ensure that they can easily and without any fear ask questions and not be ashamed or embarrassed about it. This involves first and foremost making changes to their physical environment, changing attitudes towards school-work and education, as well as creating a more easy-going, lighthearted, passionate yet…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is boost a students belief in their own intelligence, and make them understand that no concept is beyond their understanding. Many of my friends express this exact feeling after I tutor them, as instead of just teaching them formula's, I focus on teaching the concepts and theory behind those…

Make sure that students feel comfortable in the environment of learning, and not just teaching them the concepts they need to get good grades but also help them develop skills that can be applied later in life like critical thinking, I think it’s also important that as tutors, we help take some of the stress that naturally comes with school off…

As a tutor, it is crucial to make sure a student is able to independently and confidently apply a concept. In order to do that there are a few steps, I as a tutor would follow which start with identifying gaps in the knowledge. Then create plans, and use different techniques like scaffolding, explaining, and modeling to provide an in-depth idea of…

The most important thing a tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. I like to make sure I'm personalising my lessons for each individual student and I'm…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is remove the fear around a subject. For many students, especially in maths and science, the volume of information can be overwhelming. I consider empathy and genuine regard for the student and his/her learning experience as most important. While it is true that we could be highly skilled in the subject matter or content area, without genuine regard for the students teaching them might simply be mechanical and without connection. Inside Junction VillageTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student James practised structuring TEEL paragraphs for English assignments and reviewed expectations for Year 7 content.

In Year 10, Emily focused on solving linear equations from her recent school test and worked on drawing linear graphs, including finding x- and y-intercepts using graphing methods.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student revised statistics topics such as interpreting box plots and tackled probability questions from the textbook to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled to keep written calculations organized in algebra, with a tutor noting, "her maths layout makes it hard to spot where she went wrong." This disorganization slowed down error correction during lessons.

In Year 3 grammar, another student often left homework incomplete, so progress on conjunctions and prepositions stalled between sessions.

A VCE student preparing for SACs was reluctant to create a bound reference, making revision less effective.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 found it difficult to retain new maths content because practice questions were left unfinished each week—leading to repeated confusion over previously covered material.

Recent Achievements

One Junction Village tutor noticed Ishan could now write a full TEEL paragraph from just a prompt and independently pick out visual images based on written descriptions—something he struggled with before.

In another session, Riley, also in high school, was able to recall key points from previous lessons and confidently apply BODMAS rules without hesitation, showing more initiative during problem-solving than last term.

Meanwhile, an upper primary student who used to quietly guess when unsure has started openly asking for help whenever she's confused, most recently raising her hand after stumbling over multiplication tables.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lighthouse Christian College Cranbourne.
