Although it is highly important that a tutor teaches their students the material covered in the syllabus, it is equally as important that the tutor teaches their students the tools required to succeed in a competitive academic environment. As a tutor, I instil in my students a great work ethic, teaching them highly effective study and time…

According to my experience, student need to get overall objective and subjective knowledge to compare ideal and non-ideal example of real world experience through tutor. The best thing tutor can do is to motivate and educate the student by connecting from the student’s point of interest. Besides, tutor should prepare objective questions to make…

For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. Intuitive( I can understand and know when a topic boring and making it fun or finding a…

The most important thing for a tutor is that they further the learning and understanding of their student. An important role of the tutor to do this is to assist the student to learn in a way they can understand. I believe that the tutor should make it easier for the student to learn the fundamental concepts. I have a strong understanding of core…

A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. This means patiently helping the students understand…

Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

It’s also important to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment that builds confidence and encourages questions. Over time, a tutor should foster independence while…

Finding the right method to educate a student. The way you present your working and explanation should always suit the students learning style. The more they can back them-self, the more they can be composed in a test environment, the better they perform in test conditions, the better their marks. A tutor's mission is like being a guide in a fun adventure park of knowledge! I think to be able to cater to each sutdent individually is the most important thing a tutor can do. Each student learns and processes information differently. Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

Inside KarrakattaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Michael practised simplifying and comparing fractions, then applied these skills to converting between decimals and percentages.

In Year 10, Sarah focused on quadratic equations by converting from general form to turning point form and identifying roots and axes of symmetry using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex tackled linear and non-linear relationships by interpreting graphs and equations from real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full working in algebra and index notation questions; as one tutor observed, "mistakes were made due to lack of working out," which led to hidden errors that slowed progress during review.

In Year 11 physics, over-reliance on the equation sheet was noted—Chris needed more familiarity with deriving formulas independently rather than searching for answers, especially under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with reading worded problems closely; skipping key details resulted in incomplete answers on circumference and probability tasks.

During practice exams, several students lost marks due to poor time management and not checking their responses before moving on.

Recent Achievements

One Karrakatta tutoring session saw a Year 11 student, Chris, move from avoiding challenging physics questions to working through them independently and even explaining his thinking out loud—a real turnaround from early lessons where he'd hesitate or stay quiet.

In Year 10, Mitchell has stopped skipping steps in his maths working; instead of trying to solve everything mentally (and making errors), he now writes out each stage clearly and checks his answers.

For a younger student, Antonio's focus has improved noticeably—he stayed engaged for the full lesson and was quick to spot tricky parts in mental maths problems that used to trip him up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hollywood Primary School.
