A tutor should be well-prepared in ensuring students completely comprehend subject that is being taught. A tutor should be prepared to answer all sorts of question asked by the students. An excellent tutor should be genuinely interested in the students understanding. He/she should not be afraid to acknowledge anything they do not know. Instead,…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

A tutor can give a student the confidence to work independantly. Teach students on improving their strengths and minize their weakness. Enable them to quickly understand and solve problems with strong basic knowledge. A tutor can help a student to set high expectations and work towards them, making their stuggle easier. I believe higher studies…

A tutor’s most important role is to empower the student to become an independent learner. This involves not only clarifying difficult concepts but also teaching effective study strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving techniques. A tutor should create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where students feel comfortable…

I believe that making students understand the way to answer question is very important. Problem-solving skills are what they really need in the future instead of helping him to solve them. Moreover, to make them enjoy studying the subject is crucial as well. If you hate the subject, you can never do well on it. Providing students with guidance is…

The most important thing is to identify the weak spots and missing links in the understanding of the basics and build up from that to create a permanent improvement rather than a rushed process just to get instant gratification. It's also important to try to build a good learning environment that can become a regular and followable habit for the…

It is to understand that the students are human as well, we all make mistakes. By being patient and understanding the issues impacting their learning, we can further help them to achieve their goals. My strength as a tutor is my patience and care. In my job as a music teacher, I take my time to understand the student's struggle and ease their…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

The most important thing is to provide clarity and build a student’s independence. A tutor should identify where a student is struggling and give them the specific tool, whether it's a math formula or a study technique, to solve problems on their own. It’s about being a reliable resource they can trust. My strengths are my versatility and my…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to be supportive, organised, and patient. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, apart from obvious educational improvements, is to provide a non-judgemental support network as well as cultivating a growth mindset for the student to see more rapid results and instill within them a positive outlook on learning. I believe in teaching the students skills more than information. The saying goes, if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime, which is very close to my heart. I want my students to understand the problem and critically think about solutions rather than trying to copy-paste from memory.…

I believe that a tutor should be patient and focus on the things that students are struggling with. I also believe that practice makes perfect! Instead of memorisations that can be mundane for a student, I believe that it is a tutor's job to make a student's work exciting, ensuring that they are always curious and willing to learn. It is also very…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student to help them learn is to make the subject/topic approachable. From personal experience learning in the past, even the subtlest differences in teaching methods greatly affect a student's interest and capacity to learn. Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aiden tackled solving algebraic expressions through factorisation and practiced simplifying equations by working backwards.

Year 10 student Olivia focused on understanding Pythagoras' theorem and applied it to distance problems on the Cartesian plane, then moved on to trigonometry homework, learning when to use sine, cosine, or tangent in real-world contexts.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan worked on adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators, as well as applying these skills to worded fraction problems for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student frequently avoided writing out algebraic steps when solving equations, leading to repeated sign errors—"he just wrote the answer, skipping how he got there," a tutor noted.

A Year 11 physics student often forgot to bring necessary materials, like textbooks and notes, which slowed progress on graphing tasks and forced reliance on memory instead of review.

In Year 5 English, messy written work and inconsistent backchecking meant spelling mistakes persisted in stories even after feedback.

For senior biology (Year 12), incomplete notes during revision made recalling enzyme names under test conditions much harder.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking questions now talks through tricky algebra problems out loud, even when stuck—something he hesitated to do before.

In senior biology, one high schooler managed to complete a practice test on DNA replication and polypeptide synthesis with noticeably fewer errors than in earlier sessions, showing she's retaining more detail each week.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously struggled with mixed and improper fractions has begun remembering to multiply independently at the right step without reminders, finishing her homework with only self-checked corrections.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
