It is crucial for a tutor to create a safe space or a safe bond with students so they feel comfortable asking questions. If students do not ask questions then the whole teaching process becauses inefficient. I am a very patient and organised individual and I do not mind teaching the same concept numerous times or teaching them in different ways to…

I think it is important to be patient with your students. Some students are slower to learn than others, and others learn things in different ways compared to the rest. If you have the patience to teach them all properly, then it really shows on their performance. I believe that one of my strength is that I take pride in teaching my students. If…

The most important things for a tutor is to be a source of support that they can reach out to, not only in the specific subject that they're tutoring, but also studying and school life in general. I'm skilled at breaking down larger, complex ideas and explaining small details and nuances but then being able to link it all back to over-arching…

While helping friends with comp courses I’ve already done, I try to create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions until they’re confident in the topic and i feel like thats one of the most important thing for a tutor. I think what would me a good tutor is that i work by removing the pressure or embarrassment from learning…

A good tutor should ensure that students truly understand the concepts being taught by not only solving questions but also by applying the knowledge to a variety of problems. A good tutor should also encourage students' motivation and help them develop effective study skills. This includes adopting strategic approaches to learning, which can…

In my opinion, tutors have the responsability to ensure that the students have learned and correctly understood a topic. I always liked the metaphor building a car. A mechanic can tell you how to build it piece by piece but you can not replicate that process unless you have really understood it. In addition, tutors have an important role in…

According to me the most important thing for the tutor is to understand that not all students understand concepts the same way and sense when students do not understand something and willingly try another approach of presenting the material to help the student. With this approach a tutor can make a difference in the student’s learning. I believe…

Make the student fall in love with the subject. If this occurs, the student will be curious for the rest of his life, and the student will look for answers. The most important gift we can give the future generation is education. I'm a patient person. I'm aware of what I know and what I don't. If I don't know something, I make sure I understand it…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

Beyond just helping with grades, I think the most valuable thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. Academic skills are important, but confidence and mindset are everything. A tutor should create an environment where it’s okay to ask “silly†questions, make mistakes, and learn at your own pace. At the end of the day, it’s…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging and have faith in the student. Personally, when I used to have tutors, I performed the best when they reiterated, “you can do it! it’s not about the brain you were born with, it’s about how far you’re willing to go in terms of dedication and hard work,†and that stuck with me.…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make that student interested in what they are learning. Although students may not enjoy every aspect of what they're learning, if they can find even one thing that they enjoy, this could be enough. I am patient, determined, and kind to those that I tutor. So, I think that…

Always be a helping hand. In this sense, listen to the areas they think they have problems, observe the areas they may not catch onto easily and provide extra care and attention. Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max practised addition and subtraction with four-digit numbers and explored algebra through interactive games, while also tackling a NAPLAN reading comprehension task.

Year 7 student Reuben worked on expanding brackets and simplifying algebraic expressions by grouping like terms, as well as reviewing more challenging homework problems.

For Year 8, Ella focused on solving equations with x-terms on both sides—including those resulting in fractional answers—and consolidated her understanding of index laws during the session.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing out steps, choosing to solve equations mentally—"he was very fluent with the calculator," as a tutor observed, but over-reliance on it led to small errors and missed working in homework.

In Year 10 trigonometry, skipping units and failing to show sketches meant lost marks even when answers were correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner resisted tackling long division unless fully confident; this hesitation slowed progress in new maths topics.

In senior chemistry, back-checking sometimes turned into cosmetic correction rather than real error analysis, leaving calculation slips unresolved before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a big shift in Max's attitude toward reading—where he once dreaded reading aloud and froze up at mistakes, he now brings his own book to sessions and reads enthusiastically, even when he stumbles.

In high school maths, Reuben has started tackling challenging algebraic equations with less hesitation; after struggling with factorisation early on, he now solves GCF problems—even tricky ones—in a single lesson.

William also made a breakthrough in geometry by quickly recalling SOH CAH TOA rules for right-angled triangles and correctly identifying triangle sides without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Public School.
