As an english tutor, I think the most important thing is to guide students to master the correct learning method and stimulate interest in learning, rather than simply explaining the practice of knowledge points and topics. I enjoy working collaboratively in diverse teams and I am eager to impart a variety of knowledge to clients. My culturally…

I think an important thing for an english tutor is to not tell the student the answer but help them learn how to achieve the answer themselves. Incorporating coaching into tutoring allows the student to learn how to do it independently when the tutor is not around. I am very patient with children and I like to come up with different activities so…

Being able to understand your student is the most important thing to me. You should be able to pinpoint what they're struggling with, keep up with what they need, and make sure to throw in some life advice as well! For younger students (and all students in general!), being a safe space for them to confidently ask questions is my main goal, I want…

I think as an english tutor, the most important that one can do for a student is guide and mentor. Guidance is very essential in a student's life. It is also to be taken care of that guidance does not turn into spoon-feeding. My strengths as a tutor are: patience, positive mindset, kindness, realizing that every student is different, time…

Often times I've found that a lot of students struggle with certain parts in learning but don't speak up about them because of being afraid. In light of this, I believe the most important things an english tutor can do is be the more proactive party in this situation - which should go without saying. Observing your student and noting down what…

I think the most important things an english tutor can do for a student, besides clarifying concepts, is to build their confidence and encourage critical thinking. From my short informal tutoring experience, I found that students can sometimes hyperfocus on guidelines/given examples, so much so that they believe there is no alternate approach to…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to be self-sufficient - I'm a firm believer that anybody can study by themselves, and that tutors are there to help the student bounce ideas off and help break down hard to digest pieces of education. I believe my main strength as a tutor is that for every student,…

Students may need some help, so the tutor role is vital to guide them and simplify the process for them to thrive. Patience and kindness is great quality, and the education process is not a one-size-fits-all approach. I believe it is vital for the tutor to be patience. A tutor can help a child open up their personality and provide them with confidence as well as knowledge. The tutor can help the child decide its future and help him shape his opinion. Inside WaterlooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Elliott revised multiplication and division, then built confidence with fractions and long division using visual models.

For Year 8, Sophie worked on algebraic expansion and simplification alongside measurement skills, focusing on area and perimeter of different shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Adam tackled trigonometry topics including sine and cosine rules as well as curve sketching, helping to prepare for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 English, one student struggled with formatting sentences and showed a reluctance toward narrative writing; as the tutor noted, "needed help with formatting sentences."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 mathematics, untidy written work made solutions difficult to follow—messy handwriting directly led to lost marks when misread answers were submitted.

For a senior (Year 11) maths student, late submission of their formula sheet caused stress before an assessment: "Didn't give me cheat (Formula) sheet for the school in time."

These process habits interrupted feedback and sometimes meant unnecessary mistakes went unnoticed until revision.

Recent Achievements

One Waterloo tutor recently noticed a Year 7 student who used to rush through maths questions is now slowing down, carefully reading each problem and explaining his thinking out loud—a big shift from guessing in silence.

A Year 11 student who once struggled with probability is now consistently answering intersection problems and addition rule problems correctly, even tackling harder examples on his own.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who previously needed help for every division step managed to complete her long division worksheet independently and finished all practice test questions without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waterloo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School.
