I believe personalisation is the most important thing a tutor can do. Coming to class with a lesson plan, so that the student doesn't have to provide questions if they are excelling and have completed all resources provided by the teacher. Yet you must also be able to alter this plan throughout the lesson in order to focus on where the student is…

I feel that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong sense of confidence within themselves, and also create an environment where open discussion can take place and students feel comfortable asking questions. Lastly, teaching critical thinking skills is just as important as the students would be able to tackle…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

Be Patient. I think as a tutor you have to understand that people learn and process things differently. There are students that understand really fast and there are students that do that really slow. Ultimately, you have to be patient and willing to imbibe the knowledge in them. I think as a person and as someone who’s worked in various fields…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is clarifying any and all doubts that a student may have and patiently teaching the student until he/she understands the concept as well as the tutor. I believe my greatest strength as a tutor is having the patience to teach someone younger than myself and the willingness to teach them the…

Make them feel comfortable to ask questions, most students are confused or stuck but that is not the main issue, helping students developt that inquisitive mindset and to always ask why is instrumental to success. I have always been extroverted and have strong soft skills, especially in communication. I have always enjoyed explaining concepts,…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are as follows: 1. Spark an interest of excitement over the subject due to the tutor's enthusiasm and encouragement. 2. Help the student succeed in their academics. 3. Turn a stressful or scary thing into something enjoyable and fun. As a tutor, I have 3 key strengths. The first is…

To convince them that they have what it takes to succeed, and to inspire them with the will to do so. Many of my friends and teachers throughout my life have done this for me, and as a result have instilled in me a deep passion for mathematics. I'd like nothing more than to pass this on to other people. I have a tendency to try to think of many…

The most important and basic task of a tutor is to effectively deliver and teach the material requested by the student beforehand. However, I consider inspiring the student to learn as equally important. This is because students can only achieve more academically, only if they have genuine interest in the topic. This is why I hope to inspire…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to build further curiosity in that particular field or in some subject in general. To inspire a student into loving/ enjoying a subject is the hallmark of a good tutor I am a very open book and can gel and build strong connections with people/students easily. Additionally, due to my experience as…

Breaking down complex concepts into small builidng blocks, such that the student can construct these ideas together, and reach an understanding of the concept. If the student is about to undertake exams, teaching exam techniques and proper preperation is quite an important thing a tutor can do as well. Since I recently completed the IB program,…

In middle school, I wasn’t a particularly bright student, and I needed the help of tutoring to catch up with my grade level. After trying various teachers and tutors, one of the most impactful things I learnt was how much of a leader a tutor needs to be. It’s all well if someone knows the subject material, but if they don’t understand how to…

A tutor should create a safe and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. It’s also important to tailor teaching to the student’s individual needs and pace, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Beyond just content, a tutor should help build the student’s confidence and…

One significantly important thing a tutor can do is enhance students' drive for learning. A tutor has to be flexible enough to change their teaching style and methods according to the student's learning styles and capabilities. No two students are the same which means adaptability becomes a key skill that a tutor has to have and be able to provide a well tailored tutoring style for the student. Moreover, a tutor has to be kind and…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max practised addition and subtraction with four-digit numbers and explored algebra through interactive games, while also tackling a NAPLAN reading comprehension task.

Year 7 student Reuben worked on expanding brackets and simplifying algebraic expressions by grouping like terms, as well as reviewing more challenging homework problems.

For Year 8, Ella focused on solving equations with x-terms on both sides—including those resulting in fractional answers—and consolidated her understanding of index laws during the session.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing out steps, choosing to solve equations mentally—"he was very fluent with the calculator," as a tutor observed, but over-reliance on it led to small errors and missed working in homework.

In Year 10 trigonometry, skipping units and failing to show sketches meant lost marks even when answers were correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner resisted tackling long division unless fully confident; this hesitation slowed progress in new maths topics.

In senior chemistry, back-checking sometimes turned into cosmetic correction rather than real error analysis, leaving calculation slips unresolved before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a big shift in Max's attitude toward reading—where he once dreaded reading aloud and froze up at mistakes, he now brings his own book to sessions and reads enthusiastically, even when he stumbles.

In high school maths, Reuben has started tackling challenging algebraic equations with less hesitation; after struggling with factorisation early on, he now solves GCF problems—even tricky ones—in a single lesson.

William also made a breakthrough in geometry by quickly recalling SOH CAH TOA rules for right-angled triangles and correctly identifying triangle sides without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Public School.
