I think the most important thing is to help a student build confidence, not just get through a problem. If they believe they can’t do it, nothing else works. I had self doubt right before my HSC exams, so I truly know how important confidence is and how strongly it affects a person’s performance. Second is to teach them how to think through a…

First and Foremost, teaching every topic, every concept as clearly as possible and ensuring that the student has actually understood it. A tutor should also ensure that he is giving the student his full and complete attention during a class. I can explain topics very easily and precisely. I am great with giving examples and it is my favourite way…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

A tutor’s most important role is to empower the student to become an independent learner. This involves not only clarifying difficult concepts but also teaching effective study strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving techniques. A tutor should create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where students feel comfortable…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

I can make them solve problems in the least time possible. If they were to face a multiple choice questions scenario I can help the eliminate options in a logical way. I think a tutor should in a sense hold the student accountable. For example a student might pick up a set of practice questions in their spare time and leave it mid way through but if that problem set was assigned by the tutor it gives the student far more reason to see the whole thing through. In this way we can provide (external) motivation to…

Being committed to the student and their growth should be the most important thing for a tutor. There is nothing more rewarding for a teacher than seeing their student improve under them. Secondly, the tutor should explain the concepts thoroughly, and also structure the lessons in such a way that learning could be made easier. Thirdly, the tutor…

I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in only one…

I believe a tutor can do for a student is to help them in any possible way. I have worked as a private tutor and I believe that there are a wide range of things a tutor can do for a student. First is to be able to teach well and not be too harsh on the student as it creates discouragement. Being able to communicate and be patient will allow the…

Imparting information is an important part of being a tutor, but modelling curiosity, a genuine love of learning and knowledgem and above all showing others what it looks like to be passionate about the at or discipline is as important. As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

To acknowledge development and passion and help the student grow in a direction that they deem appropriate. It is important to get to know the student and their aspirations in order to achieve this. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build a good relationship so the student feels confident and secure. While education is paramount, a student who feels unsafe or stressed is more likely to perform poorly and absorb less information, so I believe that being someone the student is comfortable around in turn leads to…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median and mode calculations as well as interpreting graphs.

In Year 10, Ethan practised non-right angled trigonometry using the sine rule and cosine rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Liam focused on basic trigonometry and explored normal distribution, including understanding its key properties and uses.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often worked out maths in their head instead of writing steps, which made it harder to spot where misunderstandings with algebra or negative signs occurred—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors.

In Year 11 Physics, a student froze when unsure how to start a question and needed guidance breaking down what was being asked; missing definitions slowed progress.

A senior Chemistry student relied heavily on checking notes for formulas rather than recalling them independently, leading to lost time during problem-solving.

Nerves in impromptu speeches (Year 10 English) led to rushed delivery and forgotten structure.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington tutor noted a high school student who previously hesitated to speak up now talks through his problem-solving process out loud and actively asks questions when stuck, rather than staying quiet.

Another secondary student showed new independence by checking over each maths problem and explaining their reasoning step-by-step—something he'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner, after struggling with fractions last term, has started converting mixed numbers independently and can now solve most ratio problems solo.

Last week, one completed all ten practice questions without needing any hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
