In mi opinion, a tutor should take care of the students in terms of ensuring that they understand each one of the concepts and topics explained. He/she should not hesitate in repeating an explanation as many times as necessary if the student doesn't understand any topic. After finishing my bachelor in Aerospace engineering and some international…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment and to instill a deep understanding of the subject matter. It's crucial to build confidence in students, helping them to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than obstacles. A tutor should also strive to make…

I believe the ability to be adaptable and always open to changing one's teaching methods to suit a student's learning style is key to an effective student-teacher relationship. Listening to a student and trying to work around their needs is definitely one of the most important things that can be done for a student. Having graduated high school…

One of the main roles of a tutor is to support their student's learning and understanding. As a tutor, it is not only important to provide as much assistance and help as possible, but also to encourage them to think independently. By thoroughly explaining the concepts to them in a fun and engaging manner, they will develop a deeper appreciation…

A tutor should always motivate a student even if he/she is not performing well. A tutor should identify the strength of the student and work accordingly. I have worked as a teacher also in one of the IB school in India. For the first six months I worked in an Additional learning support department where I learnt about differentiated teaching and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them truly understand the material. A good tutor should create a supportive environment, adapt to each student's learning style, encourage questions, and inspire independent thinking so students can succeed both academically and beyond the classroom. Learning is all about association. You cannot go to C without having to go through A and B. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to focus on the basics first and only if the basics are clear should the tutor proceed with the new concepts. Individual attention to each student and identifying their individual…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make studying not feel like a boring task. The more fun a class is, the more likely it is that the student will put in extra effort in the subject. Also, an environment with healthy competition is necessary for maximising the output of each individual. As I have recently completed my schooling, I…

The most important thing as a tutor is to be patient and understanding. As someone who has gone through the same thing, I'm relatable. A tutor can be kind and patient with the student and open to any kind of question, however basic it might be and not ridicule the child. The tutor can also repeat the same thing until the student had finally grasped the concept so that they are completely confident. Having grown up around teachers, I have learnt a lot from them. I have learnt to…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand. Students who are strugglings with certain subjects might not actually be bad at the subjects but rather they might not have had proper guidance from their teachers or they do not have a strong foundation, or they are just not studying in the right method. Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

Inside KewTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Annie revised linear equations and explored polynomials and real functions, using worked examples to clarify each step.

In Year 9, Lenny tackled trigonometry concepts with a focus on SOH CAH TOA and also reviewed past tests covering linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ethan practiced times tables (3s and 4s) alongside school homework on multiplication, supporting accuracy through repeated exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student's stress during tests led to misreading questions and answering incorrectly—"she misread the condition or questions, hence wrote down the wrong answer." She was encouraged to highlight key words and practice under timed conditions.

In Year 9 Maths, messy or incomplete working made isolating variables in equations harder; a tutor noted that neater layout would help track steps for midpoint and distance tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to show written working in mixed fraction subtraction due to fear of mistakes, which slowed improvement and left gaps when reviewing errors together.

Recent Achievements

A Kew tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, after previously relying heavily on step-by-step guidance, now solves simultaneous equations using the elimination method with much more independence and even asks for extra practice when unsure.

In senior Chemistry, another high schooler who used to hesitate with equilibrium questions is now confidently tackling harder examples and did especially well on their first SAC, showing clear improvement since last term.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Annie moved from needing help with multiplying and dividing fractions to gradually answering these on her own by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kew Primary School.
