A great tutor should focus on building a student's confidence for learning by fostering understanding, critical thinking, and a safe environment for growth. By clarifying concepts and questions carefully step-by-step, tutors make learning approachable. Positive reinforcement for progress while setting and tracking achievable goals offers clear…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. A good tutor will make their students feel comfortable,…

When I went to school, I recall that a lot of the subjects that I took particular interest in were due to the quality of instruction from the teacher. My belief is that children are naturally inquisitive and therefore it is important for a teacher / tutor to tap into that potential by employing the right style of communication, presentation and…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to build a strong personal connection with the student and incorporate connections to the student's interest while teaching. It is very important to work on the weaknesses of the student and personalize the teaching accordingly. Following are my strengths as a tutor: 1. My focus on…

I think the most important thing is not to do the questions for them but to guide them as they do them so that in the future they will be able to do them by themselves. Giving certain little tricks and clues to help them remember certain things as well can be good as it will help them to remember certain concepts. I think because I also somewhat…

Not only to foster understanding, but building confidence is essential. This involves fluency of course, but also being confident in trying many methods even if it gets tedious after the first few attempts, while being able to seek help no matter the triviality. I'm patient with all learning paces, and enthusiastic to learn about any student's way…

I believe that the most important role of a tutor is to provide reassurance and create an environment where students can feel heard and understood. By recognising and addressing their individual challenges, a tutor can support students in a way that strengthens both their understanding and their confidence, enabling them to engage with the…

I believe the most vital thing a tutor can do for a student is to give an explanation. We tutors exist to answer and explain questions that a lesson can't provide. Generally, it is best that a student is comfortable asking questions without being judged by classmates and that is the foundation of learning. Not to mention, each tutor might have a…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

A tutor must be aware of the needs of a student. They must understand what the student already knows, and how they best learn, and a good tutor can adapt to different student needs. A good tutor also needs to inject confidence into a student. Teaching is one thing, but showing a student that they can succeed is what makes a difference. I am a…

Being a role model and mentor to the student, both academically and in life. By helping them develop their skills in the subject area, a tutor models approaches to thinking, problem solving and one's attitude towards learning. Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. He/ she should be a friend who shares their knowledge while solving problems together rather than being a standard commercial teacher. Personalization, Adaptation, Patience, Practical…

Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. As a tutor, firstly, I would like my students to understand that making mistakes is normal and part of the learning process. Making mistakes helps them understand the subject material in greater depth. Secondly, I would like to make learning a fun and easy experience for students and give them the tools to work through seemingly challenging tasks…

Put yourself in the situation. Think about what you would do as someone who is supposedly better at tackling difficult problems if you stumbled upon the same question. Then convey your thinking to the student. I am patient and I am good at predicting what student may find difficult in a certain exam/test. I am also adaptive to individual dilemmas…

Inside KillaraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Henry practised consumer arithmetic by calculating GST on different purchases and worked through number skills using real-life examples.

For Year 10, Anna revised simultaneous equations, tackling both substitution and elimination methods, and strengthened her algebra by adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student reviewed polynomial graphing techniques before moving on to exponential growth and decay scenarios as well as interpreting rates of change with respect to time.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student needed to read questions more carefully but often jumped straight to calculations, leading to confusion between multiplying and applying powers.

A Year 11 learner showed reluctance to map out working in probability problems—skipping this step meant errors weren't spotted until the end.

Another in Year 12 calculus repeatedly made small mistakes with definite integrals, as a tutor noted: "Minor careless errors became obvious during expansion."

Across several years, some learners arrived late or without needed materials; missing these first minutes led to gaps that resurfaced during revision sessions and complicated new topics later on.

Recent Achievements

One Killara tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to guess at algebraic problems now takes time to approach each question logically, breaking it down step by step instead of rushing.

In Year 11, another student who previously hesitated with complex differentiation has begun tackling chain rule and tangent questions confidently after a few worked examples, showing clear progress in structuring their solutions.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student made a tangible leap by independently converting percentages to decimals for the first time—last month they always needed prompting but now complete these conversions on their own before moving ahead.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lindfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Family Catholic Primary School.
