I think the most important thing for a tutor should be to work with the student, so that they can work independently. This is by teaching them the basics of a subject but also teaching them effective ways to study and learn so they are not reliant on the tutor. I think my strengths are as a tutor is I just recently completed year 12 a few months…

Explaining concepts clearly builds the students' confidence and creates a supportive learning environment. It is better to understand the material rather than just memorise answers. Tutors should also encourage questions, be patient, and adapt their teaching to the student’s learning style so the student can improve and become more independent…

For me the most important part I can do for a student is to build a genuine and strong connection with them. I believe that when a strong and relaxed relationship is created with students, they are far more likely to take ownership of their learning. Alongside this, I think without this factor many students will struggle to actually learn and…

Whilst the main purpose of tutoring is to help students grow in their knowledge, I do also believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient and show them that they are capable and help them create a growth mindset, that even if they might not be able to do a specific task now, with help and hard work they will get…

I believe besides the obvious academic sides, it is important to just be genuine as more than a tutor for a student and try to help them as much as I can whether as an older peer to look up towards to or just someone to talk to. If I treat tutoring as a chore or a job, I feel like the student will be able to feel that and that's why it's more…

I think a tutor shoul really care about the student and be looking out for them. Persoanlly as a current year 12 student, my one wish from a tutor would be to have a genuine concern about my learning. I think I am very patient and can explain things in a variety of persepectives and provide relevant examples to a wide range of different…

Always being able to coach using multiple methods, and finding out what works best. If the student learns well then the tutor is successful I am able to calm and soothe stressed students who may feel overwhelmed or frustrated with their lack of progress. I went through similar things so I can assist with…

Not only teach them the concepts but teach them how to study it and the principles of how to study. Telling students especially those in VCE techniques to deal with stress and that stress is natural. Making sure to celebrate progress and tell students when they are doing well to keep them motivated and not second guessing themselves. I’m…

Beside tutoring the knowledge, the most important thing is support. Supporting a student from not giving up in what they are doing. Life is always up and down, endure the pain and overcome the difficulties with all your might. I will motivate the student and pass on my passionate and encouragement in studying to the student I taught. I am a…

I think that the most significant thing a tutor can do for a student is to work with the students inherent interests and aptitudes. When I reflect on the teachers and tutors that had the biggest impact on my schooling, the individuals that stand out are the ones that recognized and challenged me in the areas I naturally gravitated towards. I…

Inside Kilsyth SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aiden focused on positive and negative integers as well as BODMAS, building accuracy with step-by-step practice.

In Year 10, Sarah worked through binomial and normal probability distributions, using real-life examples to strengthen her understanding of statistical models.

For VCE Maths Methods, Year 12 student Ethan tackled differentiation techniques including chain, product, and quotient rules alongside advanced circular functions, reinforcing concepts through targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student missed several early classes, which made it difficult to grasp new content—"she needs more than 2 hours a week of tutoring to cover the contents she has missed."

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student forgot key log and exponent rules during revision; this often slowed progress on exam questions.

For a Year 8 class, homework was left incomplete ("no homework"), causing gaps in learning from week to week.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with area and volume problems as he "could not remember and implement his area and volume rules," leading to confusion when laying out solutions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kilsyth South noticed one high school student who was initially hesitant to ask for help now regularly raises questions and talks through tricky maths problems aloud, instead of quietly guessing.

Another Year 12 student, who previously got stuck on worded differentiation problems, was able to tackle all but one advanced question independently this week, applying techniques from earlier lessons without needing step-by-step guidance.

In a recent primary session, a younger student who once struggled with focus worked steadily through every set task and even asked for extra homework when he finished early.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayswater Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bayswater North Primary School.
