Tutors play an important role in supporting student learning. I found my tutors very valuable as approachable mentor figures to ask questions and not feel judgement. I think the regularity of sessions also acts as a form or accountability for homework and school attendence. Building a relationship with students is a strength of mine and being able…

I believe the most helpful and most important thing a tutor can do is to understand the students and their needs. Everyone is different and everyone learns differently as a result. It is a good tutors job to understand how their student learns and cater it to their need. I believe I am extremely compassionate, empathetic and I always look to…

I consider guidance as the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Teachers are important but sometimes they can be carried away by teaching a large group of students in the class. Tutors are there to give personal support to the students to help not just their academic development and also emotionally What most teachers cannot do is…

I firmly believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning experience. Be patient. I believe undermining a students effort is the worst thing that could be done, not just from a tutor but from any significant figure in a students life. A tutor must be patient irregardless if a student isn't following the lesson plan how they would like, and the tutor should tailor it accordingly to their needs. I pay close attention…

I believe besides the obvious academic sides, it is important to just be genuine as more than a tutor for a student and try to help them as much as I can whether as an older peer to look up towards to or just someone to talk to. I think the most important things as a tutor can do for a student is to make them enjoy learning and be more confident. Instead of telling them what to do, as a tutor, we should guide them to find a solution. This way, we empower them to become independent thinkers. By guiding students toward a solution rather than simply providing it, we build…

Inside KnoxfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Paige worked on building speed and accuracy with double-digit addition and subtraction, as well as practising mental maths strategies for complementary numbers to ten.

Year 11 student Lily focused on balancing thermochemical equations in Chemistry and explored the production process and environmental impact of various fuels.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled problems involving definite integrals—such as estimating area under curves—and reviewed differentiation techniques using chain rule applications in preparation for VCE exams.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working ahead in VCE Maths Methods left some school assignment problems incomplete, which meant that gaps lingered and couldn't be addressed until the next session.

In senior Chemistry, one student often delayed sending lab reports to the tutor before class—"If Sarah can send me the report a day earlier, we'll save time for feedback"—resulting in less time to tackle misconceptions or extend her analysis.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's tendency to rely on hands or number lines during subtraction led to hesitation when faced with numbers above 20; this slowed mental calculation and caused uncertainty when new combinations appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Knoxfield tutor noticed a big shift with Sarah in Year 12 Chemistry—she's now coming to sessions ready with her own questions and even prepares materials ahead of time, showing far more initiative than before.

Another high school student recently started pinpointing and correcting her own homework mistakes during lessons, something she hadn't done independently until now.

In a primary session, a younger learner who previously hesitated with vertical addition is now breezing through problems quickly and rarely makes errors.

Last week, Sarah finished her practical report without needing any extra support from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rowville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carrington Primary School.
