I believe that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student, is to help them build confidence in their own academic abilities by supporting them in a way that reinforces their sense of self achievement. It is also important for a tutor to reinforce and support the student's classroom learning, beyond set homework and assignments…

Actively listening to the student and what they want to achieve. Being empathetic to the student and if a particular strategy isn't working, then tackling it from a different angle until together the tutor and student find what works best for the student and their style of learning. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is improve their confidence. Lack of confidence in one's academic ability leads to many problems including underperformance and lack of enjoyment. If a student feels confident with the skills they are learning it will greatly improve not only their academic results; but also their general…

Many students who need tutoring believe they are falling behind or that their contributions in class are insufficient, but tutors should always ensure that their students' learning is valid at their own speed and constantly…

It is also important for me as a tutor to serve as a good role model for students. I try to make concepts easier for students to understand. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not spoon-feed the student. School is about learning to tackle challenges and problems, not necessarily about just passing or just scoring good grades. As a tutor, you are there to ensure you equip the student with the right tools and show them how to use those tools. I believe my…

I think being kind and ensuring that the student is enjoying learning at all times is the most important thing. If the students head is not in it it's important for a tutor to go at their pace. make sure they're on the right track with their studies and even if you don't know the answer for yourself, be sure to steer them in the right direction of where they can find the information. Knowing what to study and how to study whilst managing time efficiently is just as important as the content itself. As someone who has been studying full…

Nicolette, Landsdale

Inside LandsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia practised calculating surface area for cylinders and hemispheres, then applied methods for finding linear equations from two points and used simultaneous equations to locate their intersection.

Year 10 student Daniel focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions with single terms and reviewed index rules.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jamie tackled vectors by finding resultant angles and directions, worked through angle properties, and represented vectors in terms of other vectors using diagrams.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on vectors tended to rush into questions and sometimes neglect parts of the question, as one tutor noted, leading to incomplete solutions when multiple steps were required.

In Year 10, another student over-relied on formulas without fully grasping their purpose in algebraic applications; this shortcut resulted in repeated confusion with more complex problems.

A Year 7 learner showed uncertainty with times-tables and often guessed answers rather than working them out, especially during long division exercises. These habits meant time was lost correcting preventable errors instead of building confidence with new content.

Recent Achievements

One Landsdale tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after weeks of confusion with compound interest, managed to complete most of an investigation independently and only stumbled when key information was missing—a real step up from relying on constant guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who previously struggled with simultaneous equations is now tackling simpler questions on her own and even trying new methods without prompting.

In primary sessions, one Year 4 student—who used to freeze at the sight of long multiplication—now finishes multi-digit problems quickly and with fewer errors than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Girrawheen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Landsdale Primary School.
