I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them toward their personal goals, by giving them the confidence and skills to attain them. My strengths include my strong knowledge of maths and exam techniques. I have worked extensively with kids, working in an afterschool care program and know how to empathise with younger…

It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

Everything begins with building a relationship with the child/student and getting to know them as a person, what interests them inside and outside of school. I believe in my students and their ability to succeed academically and overall and I make this message clear. I tell them, on a regular basis, I believe in you! You can do this! I won't…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. And many students tends to lose focus, or go mind blank during exams due to a lack of confidence. In addition, it is extremely important for a tutor…

Meet them where they are, not where you expect them to be. A lot of students come in already feeling like they're bad at the subject, so the priority is rebuilding their confidence first. Getting the right answer matters, but getting the student to believe they can get the right answer matters more. My maths background gives me a strong command of…

Ease their anxiety. Time spent on understanding. (Process is more important than the result) Giving them the tools to fish than rather the fish itself. Showing them stress doesn’t solve problems, making an effort does. There is nothing you can’t do. One day these things will help you. Make them realise their potential. Patience…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student mainly relies on what the end goal of the student is. If it is just to get the homework done, it will get done. But, for me as a tutor, I would personally make sure that every student understands the concept from the beginning rather than providing a general overview. I believe…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire a student to love what they are studying and enjoy the experience of learning. Excellence will surely follow after. I believe all educators need to be able to connect with students. My experience is that being able to build bonds of trust and goodwill goes a long way in opening students up to what you're teaching, as well as facilitating a comfortable environment where students not only learn, but enjoy doing so. I believe my past experience in education is my…

The most important thing is creating a personal relationship so that the teacher almost understands the student more than the student understands themselves. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ignite a student's curiosity and passion for learning. When a student finds joy in the process, success naturally follows. I think that these 3 things are a must : Work on Student’s strengths. Look for students interests , so we can connect them to the contents being thought. Constant feedback I have good rapport with students , and I firmly believe that all starts with connection, so students can feel at ease. Adaptability is key because with individual…

Inside Lane CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jessica focused on mastering times tables and tackling area and perimeter problems using worded scenarios.

For Year 9, Ethan practised solving equations involving x² as well as applying the Pythagoras theorem to both direct distance and three-dimensional contexts, often using diagrams to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zoe explored applications of trigonometric functions—solving for unknown sides with sine, cosine, and tangent—and worked through angle of elevation and depression questions in real-world settings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student often missed negative signs when rearranging equations—"be more careful with the positive and negative signs," as a tutor observed—which led to incorrect solutions even after correct initial steps.

A Year 9 student showed hesitation expressing probability answers as decimals or fractions, sometimes switching formats mid-question, which muddled final answers.

In senior trigonometry, confusion persisted between cosine and tangent when identifying sides of triangles, resulting in misapplied formulas and lost marks.

Meanwhile, a primary learner avoided showing long division working, likely from lack of confidence with times tables; this meant partial answers but no path for error-checking or feedback.

Recent Achievements

One Lane Cove tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated with word problems now breaking down multi-step questions independently and spotting which details are relevant.

In Year 10, a student who used to confuse the gradient and y-intercept in linear equations can now correctly identify each part and graph the line without prompting.

Another recent session with a primary schooler showed real change: after weeks of struggling, she remembers far more of her times tables and tackled two-digit multiplication with much less reliance on written prompts, even choosing to try a harder problem herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lane Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lane Cove Public School.
