The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach each individual student with an individual technique that will suit their way of learning things. The most important thing for a tutor to do to a student is to be able to connect with them on a level that allows them to understand the content. Not being able to form a connection with the student makes the learning process tough. It is important to find an approach that enables the student to succeed. As a tutor, I am able to connect with the…

I set up goals by coming up with strategies for individual sections, and giving students ways to measure how well they’re implementing the strategy. Implementing these strategies successfully on homework is a short-term goal, on practice tests are intermediate goals, and on their live exam is a long-term goal. It is fine if students are slow to…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

Building confidence so a student tells themselves "I can do this if I try." But equally, making sure that confidence never stops them from asking for help when stuck. Both matter. Beyond that, earning the student's trust comes first. A student who trusts their tutor stops hiding confusion and starts engaging honestly. That is when real learning…

As each student has different learning styles you need to be observant and communicate with them as much as possible to ensure that they are optimising their learning. Furthermore, the tutor must be enthusiastic about the subject, if the student sees that…

Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
