As stated above it is important for a tutor to be patient and understanding of others. This would allow for a tutor to be adaptive in their teaching, altering the method of teaching content in order to assist a student's understanding. It is also important for a tutor to provide a comfortable learning environment and supply consistent effort to…

It is also very important to be extremely patient with them and always support and encourage them to keep trying. It is important to guide the students through questions and to be able to alter techniques depending on the student to help…

Patience is vital for students of all ages and skill-levels. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient with them in order to accommodate their strengths alongside their weaknesses. Simply 'teaching' is not enough for a student given their tutor lacks patience for them. With many years as an instructor under my belt, my…

Show commitment, whether its through showing up on time, or taking some of your spare time at home to mark their work. Also to support and encourage the individual to achiever their very best. I can explain a concept in many different ways, so if the student doesn't understand, I can easily explain in other ways until they get it. I can also adapt…

I think that a tutor shouldn't just rote teach a student problems so that they can pass exams, this leads to little useful learning on the students part. I think a tutor's most important job is to teach the student problem-solving strategies/learning methods as well as thoroughly work through the in's and out's of the content; alongside problems…

A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

Most tutors forget that students never enjoy tutoring, so it is important to set interesting challenges to keep students motivated and also polishing their skills using unorthodox methods. Too much of the time tutors just read off the textbook and don't provide alternative methods or keep the students' focus on their work. I believe the students…

I think that in order to become good at a subject, passion plays a major role in a student's success. Sam’s been great for my Sam and after over a year of other tutoring which Sam hated, I can’t recall one time when Sam has not wanted to do his tutoring with Sam. As a result Sam’s far more engaged with Maths and has moved up a group at school for next year! Thank you for Sam’s persistence and flexibility on making learning fun and exciting for my Sam!

Inside LoftusTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 revision with Ella focused on double-digit multiplication and strategies for dividing larger numbers.

In Year 8, Lucas worked through index laws and simplified algebraic expressions using equations to find unknowns.

For Year 9, Sam tackled expanding and factorising algebraic brackets along with practising negative indices, applying these skills in progressively challenging questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes avoided harder problem-solving questions in maths, especially with multi-step subtraction and decimals, leading to confusion about when numbers should increase or decrease.

"She liked to skip some of the questions and got distracted at times," noted one tutor.

In Year 10, a student working on financial mathematics struggled to write out her steps, often losing confidence when combining multiple operations—her answers suffered whenever she tried to work problems out in her head.

In another session, missing a required workbook meant time was lost sourcing material rather than focusing on new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Loftus tutor recently noticed Sophie, a Year 10 student, now confidently expands and factorises algebraic expressions—last term she would hesitate or skip these questions, but this week she wrote out every step neatly without prompting.

Charlotte in Year 8 has started breaking down complex worded problems herself, identifying key information before diving in—a real shift from when she relied on the tutor to interpret questions for her.

Meanwhile, in primary school sessions, one student who previously guessed at subtraction tasks now checks their working independently and corrects mistakes before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Engadine Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loftus Public School.
