Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. They can also be someone else for the students to ask questions where they may be too shy or unable to during a large classroom environment. Tutoring can also help reinforce content that students learnt that day or week. I am a…

I think patience is the most important skill a physics tutor can have. Some students don't understand a concept right away, I had to have a concept explained to me multiple times before and if the tutor was patient I was not scared to ask. I think as I have been tutored before I knew what worked for me and what didn't so I could apply those ideas.…

I believe that a physics tutor should be extremely cautious in what they say; can everything be supported with a logical statement? Because the steps the tutors take to construct the answer are how the students learn from them, a tutor must prepare well and be confident and knowledgeable of what they are giving to the students. It's not about…

The Important thing is to give students a sense of confidence in their ability. This will require the tutor to integrate complex ideas into simple, straightforward concepts. Once the student realizes their capability, they can endure failures, learn from mistakes and try again. My strength as a tutor is definitely my close and friendly…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do is to be supportive. Even the students struggling the most always have something they're doing well. The tutors job is to highlight that and develop skills to transfer those proficiencies to other areas of the subject. Furthermore the tutor must be patient. A student is there because they need help…

Finding gaps in a students knowledge and helping to fill them, facilitating a student to learn at their own pace and in their own way, and ensuring that the student can handle problems without my help once they've learned the concept. The most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is teach them how to approach learning in a way that is self sufficient. Understanding content is important for the time, but ultimately, a tutor should leave the student with the skills to know how to understand content when the tutor is no longer there. I am patient, persistent and…

I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the course content- so they can pass assessment- and also to help them understand other aspects of the subject they need or want to understand, either for the sake of curiosity or because they have some use for it. It is best if this understanding is…

The best thing that a physics tutor can do for a student is not to regurgitate information - that can be found by reading a book, or browsing the internet; but to inspire. I believe that a perspective can be most powerfully shared by someone who has seen and understood, who can empathize with the struggles that are necessary to get to seeing the…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to ask them for constant feedback/questions. Some students are hesitant to ask questions when they are confused, which can easily lead to them not understanding content. Hence, it is important as a tutor to actively make sure that your student actually understands what you are…

I had a physics tutor in high school for my VCE studies. I learned that a tutor must be a supportive figure that guides their student with compassion and patience. I think the biggest thing a physics tutor can do for a student is provide confidence. With confidence a student can approach a subject with understanding but also take risks and experiment and question the subject which leads to a better understanding and ultimately a passion for the topic. I share a passion for learning and try to pass that along…

Sam’s been great for my Sam and after over a year of other tutoring which Sam hated, I can’t recall one time when Sam has not wanted to do his tutoring with Sam. As a result Sam’s far more engaged with Maths and has moved up a group at school for next year! Thank you for Sam’s persistence and flexibility on making learning fun and exciting for my Sam!

Inside LoftusTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 revision with Ella focused on double-digit multiplication and strategies for dividing larger numbers.

In Year 8, Lucas worked through index laws and simplified algebraic expressions using equations to find unknowns.

For Year 9, Sam tackled expanding and factorising algebraic brackets along with practising negative indices, applying these skills in progressively challenging questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes avoided harder problem-solving questions in maths, especially with multi-step subtraction and decimals, leading to confusion about when numbers should increase or decrease.

"She liked to skip some of the questions and got distracted at times," noted one tutor.

In Year 10, a student working on financial mathematics struggled to write out her steps, often losing confidence when combining multiple operations—her answers suffered whenever she tried to work problems out in her head.

In another session, missing a required workbook meant time was lost sourcing material rather than focusing on new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Loftus tutor recently noticed Sophie, a Year 10 student, now confidently expands and factorises algebraic expressions—last term she would hesitate or skip these questions, but this week she wrote out every step neatly without prompting.

Charlotte in Year 8 has started breaking down complex worded problems herself, identifying key information before diving in—a real shift from when she relied on the tutor to interpret questions for her.

Meanwhile, in primary school sessions, one student who previously guessed at subtraction tasks now checks their working independently and corrects mistakes before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Engadine Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loftus Public School.
